How long is a piece of string? I've had 14 tonne behind my 100 hp on 22 mile round trips no problem on the flat. However I own a 10 tonner and up in the hills where we are it's probably slightly too big when full of wet grass and I can't keep up with a self propelled uphill. 130 hp though bosses it.

So I'd say 10t/16ft body if you're on banks and 12t/18ft if on the flat. Make take your pick. Everyone has an opinion.

You need at lest 200hp to pull a silage trailer you know!!!!:scratchhead::scratchhead:

I would think 10 ton on a 100hp is about right they can take some pulling if it's wet. Big tyers can make easier to pull.

We use to pull 12ton trailers when we where runing 130hp tractors

We run ktwo trailers now and find then very good. We have had
baileys and AS in the past and they lasted well.

I am up in cumbria so there can be some steep hills but nothing daft both tractors are 40k

Then it's a matter of sizing it to suit whichever tractor is most likely to be in front. From personal experience a 12 tonner will get in virtually everywhere a 10t will as much of the extra length is behind the axles. However they do need more clearance if your pits are indoors and also tend to have 4 stage rams where most 10tonners have 3 stage, which requires the tractor to supply more oil. My JD 6230 needs slight overfilling to tip a 10tonner and overfilling to max for a 12 tonne West I regularly use. Chap I know has a similar size McCormick X something or other and that won't tip a 10 tonner more than half way without being hugely overfilled.

I'd say 18 ton herron for the 130 hp

Once upon a time my boss of the day bought two 8t Pettit trailers, which were supposed to have tapered bodies. First day silaging with them I'm sitting there on the forager thinking "Why aren't these bloody trailers back?" Eventually the foreman turned up.
It turned out that Spike had tipped the first load which stuck in the trailer. He couldn't pull forward because all the weight had come off the back axle of his 995 and he just sat there and spun. In sheer frustration he let the clutch out with a bang in the hope of getting the load to move. All that happend is the drawbar ring pulled off the pickup hitch hook, and then the trailer drawbar shot up in the air demolishing the back of his nearly brand new cab.

it's as much to do with weight of the tractor to grip and stop as outright power.
A sensible answer!
Given you can get 100hp in a 3 ton tractor, or a 5 ton tractor...
We pull 6-7 tonners behind our cattle spec tractors, heaviest tractor we have is 4.2ton, and I think 10 tonners would really be pushing it in the wet for grip.
A heavier tractor around 5 ton plus would be better for a 10 tonner.
