Hi, no not made a move at anything yet, what are you thinking?
Was watching the nxtgen sale from home with interest, couldn’t attend due to flu/covid jabs. There looked to be some nice bullers at canny money in the mix.
I only use polled bulls, so I tend to be on a slightly different road to most folks.

Yeah, I went to Carlisle, plenty of heifers available at reasonable enough prices.
The younger calves are an iffy buy at that age.

Hi, I should probably be aiming to follow down the polled route but I like having access to all the bloodlines

to be fair i thought the calves from Colin and strathisla would have been a better bet than the over fed lumps earlier in the sale

Thats possible, but I find that a calf and anything up to 18 months or so will almost always look good, but many don't turn out good.

I've seen it in our own heifers, the closer to 2yo the more flaws they tend to show, and that's with knowing their parents.
I don't doubt that some of the heifers at the sale will turn out good, but I'd class the young ones more of a gamble.

would you say this is more applicable to the 'really smart' calves where one is potentially buying the 'dream' as apposed to the plainer sorts that will come on ?

Admittedly a lot of the fancy ones at calf sales are only there because they'll not grow, last weeks champion male calf for example, amongst others

Fancy and plain types can all get dips in their back, feet and legs that end up not being correct, most of which isn't obvious in a calf but would be in something older.

Who would you reckon would match up well for polled ped heifers? Sired by Auroch Deuter.
