Stationary wind Turbines

Last windfarm that was built here is hardly ever on and they are wanting to build another 7 right next to it. Obviously don’t have the grid capacity or the power isn’t needed
There is a desperate shortage of North South grid capacity.
whoever approved the construction of so many turbines in Scotland needs their head examined

Was told there is an algorithm that balances potential income from turning against cost of maintenance. So for instance if there is a running cost of ÂŁ10 per hour and expected income would be ÂŁ9 the windmill would shut down.

Amounts are made up to illustrate the point.
Service is charged per kWh. Therefore no generation, no cost. Therefore nonsense.

I'm interested, can you clarify that?
Many thanks for asking. My Enercon turbine has a warranty that charges 6cents euro per kWh for years 1 to 5, then 12cents per kWh from 6 to 15. Index linked so it's now at 14 I think. Mine does 2400mwhrs per year average but sometimes 2000, sometimes 2700. They know the annual yield, and they send me a variable invoice accordingly.

What country are you in? Cant be much profit after paying those charges, unless you get a big FIT

There's a turbine near me, perhaps 10yrs old, that hasn't worked for nearly 5 yrs.
Why is that likely to be, can't have been an insignificant investment.
is that one of those freebies
they were sold on to Hedge funds who have found that the cost of maintenance exceeds income. The whole lot was a giant tax fiddle

Forget about FiT. About 30 to 40k in maintenance. At ÂŁ100/mw export and 2400mw pa, that's ÂŁ200k profit. Oh, and I do get FiT, but it ain't the point. They're very profitable including maintenance.

12 cents per Kwh for maintenance as in your post 27 = 12,000 cents per Mwh
I am not sure which currency you are working in as your last post is in Sterling but I guess Euros
this would be 120 Euro roughly ÂŁ100 Per megawatt leaving nothing but the Fit
40K in maintenance would indicate you are paying 1.6 pence per Kw in maintenance which would sound very reasonable to me
Ps of course that is not all profit as you have made a very large investment in your turbine which needs writing off over the 20 years

Apologies, Apologies. Insert 'hand up' emoji. I forgot the all important decimal point! €0.06 and €1.2. 1.2 * (2400*1000) = €28800 p.a Which leaves 6 years to payback the £1.2M. But if you have FiT = faster. Separately you cannae buy E48 Enercon's anymore, too small. So next in line is a giant (for me) E82. On my site that would produce 7000Mw. Pretty good return at £100/Mw even if you elevate the maintenance with inflation and no FiT. Installed cost probably €900k/MW . But only if the grid has capacity, which mine doesn't until 2026, more like 2030.

What does it cost you when it’s not turning in opportunity cost?

Surely there are two costs?

The cost of it sitting there and then wear and tear when it’s in operation?

Opportunity cost, ie the value of the cash used to build it
Plus... most wind turbines are on a time limited planning permission. Although it is likely that permission will be given in the future for a new one on the same site, it can't be guaranteed. Once that wind has 'gone' and not earned any money, it can't be recovered.

I'm a bit baffled, sorry. It cost ÂŁ1.2m. it was paid in 5 years. And that was at ÂŁ50/mw. Plus FiT. It continues to turn and generate and look after the farm and my family and all our collective retirements and has set a base for the next generation. It has a life expectancy of 20 years but will definitely go longer once the fit has finished. It is the single best investment anyone could make. I was told to put up 3 but I ain't greedy. That one is plenty. Amen.
