Student research about silage

Hi there!

I am a final year student agriculture student at the RAU in Cirencester and for my dissertation I am conducting research into the supposed benefits of multicut grass silage over the traditional 3/4 cut system to see if in reality it is as good as its cracked up to be.

I am looking for dairy farmers producing grass clamp silage under both the traditional and multicut systems to participate in an initial short questionnaire which aims to build up a general overview of the participants farm and will hopefully identify patterns between the kind of farms that adopt each system. Willing participants are then invited to participate in further surveys to gain a deeper insight into your silage production on-farm.

The short questionnaire should only take 5 minutes and it would be greatly appreciated if anyone would take the time to fill it out.

Thanks in advance!

The number of responses so far have been far greater than I expected so once again thank you all very much, especially to those who have volunteered for further participation!

I will publish the second questionnaire shortly, this will aim to collect silage analysis, production costs, and milk yield data. This one may be a little long-winded but I have tried to make it as easy to complete as I can by adding a "save and return later" button so that it can be completed in multiple sittings if that is more convenient, under normal circumstances I would have collected this data on local farms but with the joys of coronavirus this obviously isn't possible at the moment.

Once again thank you to everyone for taking the time to participate!

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
