Sumo DD Spring Drilling

This field had been subsoiled last autumn and lightly harrowed a number of times over winter to allow BG to chit. There was a nice amount of tilth to around 40mm but bellow that was wetter so sowing depth was set at around 30mm but there was still some evidence of slotting in some areas.
To keep the soil disturbance to a minimum we reduced the forward speed to around 8-9kmh and for the majority the rear covering wheel was doing a good job of bringing crumb back on top of the sowing trench. Not punching the seed in, but just gently pushing soil back to cover the seed.
Tractor wheelings were slightly evident so wider tyres and lower psi would have helped here, but what was pleasing was sowing depth behind the wheels was not compromised due to the independent coulters.

The gift! Ha!

No I've spend enough time on my hands and knees looking at slots (ooer!..) And you can sort of tell. Maybe marginally less peeling on the right hand side because of the smaller disc and type of guage wheel?
!!!
We did have an in depth discussion about how to get the gauge wheel closer to the disc, yet avoid that 750a ability to fill the gauge wheel with pug in under 20m of snotty wet gateway! & Bonilla type seed tabs.

do you get the guage wheel filling a lot? I only get it in the wettest conditions and where there is very very little residue. I've sometimes reduced the downpressure to good effect (or leave the field!). But again, different soils, the surface dries up quicker down here.

Hi MDA, thanks for the up dates on your drill, Would it be possible To have a demo? I have about 10-12 acres in a field that due to slugs has failed, it was drilled with a claydon and has been sprayed off. We were going to nip over it with the carrier and vaddy drill or just drill. we are about 10 miles off the A1 at sutton on trent or blyth. just thought i'd ask the question no rush but would want a high seed rate.

Regards john

Currently you are demoing a 6m DD but what sizes will be available and when?

Widths currently will range from 3-9m and we will a limited number of build slots for the DD this year if ordered early!
We will also have a 3m mounted version DD at cereals this year for everyone's information which will be the first public viewing of the drill in this format.
Cheers, Marv.

Replace the solid wheel with a spoked one what they do with row crop versions in the states.

just read this thread

the moore drill takes more pulling than a weaving big disc

the tine and disc moves more soil especially when it is deeper drilling on kinder soil

the problem with spoked wheels is that when it is a bit sticky any stones get in the spoke and stop the wheel especially on cultivated land even on relatively stone free land

Like you say that is the time to leave the field..... But in the spring there is always a shaded headland, wet corner or puggy gateway trying to hold up a field's worth of drilling.

Mudsmiths. Good idea but pricey to get here.

not sure they are, I nearly imported a set in 2012 until @Simon Chiles talked sense into me to understand that if it that wet you shouldn't be in a fields at all, with anything !

on steel wheel drills you could take a plasma cutter to them and achieve much the same for less ££ if you really wanted some
