Just remembered my first crop adviser in France used to recommend this test for drilling date of sunflowers. You go to the field, remove your trousers and pants and sit on the ground. If your arse is cold wait a bit longer before drilling.

no what you mean but for 'leisure' you need them out in august so you can't wait ....mid may sow and hope

Not planning on combining them, I've got a small field overlooking a local beach, daughter recons people will pay to pick them or to stand in the field and have a picture taken?View attachment 1162449

They certainly will…

Establish them like a crop of maize, plenty of muck underneath and about 80Kg/haN. You’re basically limited to Pendamethlin so important to chose a clean field and hopefully have a bit of moisture in the ground. Sit back and watch them grow.

Weed control might be a problem, the field is rank with corn marigold.

We had an enquiry about making a “film” in our sunflowers a couple of years ago!

We’ve also seen some sheepish adults appearing from the sunflowers to get back to their cars.
