The imperfect storm continues.

Little carry over from damp harvest 2023.
Autumn cereal drilling spoilt by rain.
Autumn crops that were drilled have struggled.
Spring cereal seed barely worth planting.
SFI or fallow are an option many have embraced, very wholeheartedly.

I've no history of selling straw but I've had 3 calls from neighbours in the last month asking for straw from H 2024.
I'm taking it a compliment on my crops?

I think we'll be back to £120/t next winter.
I spoke to Northern Powergrid contractor this morning. 120 sucklers going on their farm because it's not worth stopping having b&b pigs for the winter.

The ride isn't over yet.

Or a mixed farm There's still time to get a few fields of bar,ey in soats even .
Scoop some up for seed out of a well kept store

P.enty of compound in the seedbed one or 2 fungis watch cor Mildew and they're be sorted.

Why the drama?

Depends if there will be more livestock about 2024, theoretically there will be due to high prices but in reality - could be stock are sold on ?

Regardless, I just hope farmers get to have a good 2024 farming year & good riddance to the rain.

Hopefully there is enough UK food to ensure prices don't rise too much - only time will tell.

Farmers are asking/getting about £120t for wheat out of the barns.

Hay, straw and haylage selling fast for us in wales atm, broke our sales record yesterday. 56 big bales sold in one day.

£180/t this time next year
Will be at least an average of £150 ton delivered into the SW next year i can see happening,

Would not be at all surprised if it does not get nearer to £200 ton than £150 ton at peak demand.

Will be very intresting to see what the standing straw makes, any good crops with little water damage are more than likely to top £200 acre and i would not be surprised to see £250 acre + for these fields.

But of course a lot can happen between now and harvest so lets see how it all pans out.

all very well, but livestock numbers contine to decline as people just get fed up with it all? Ask a question if money was in cattle or cows, it would be a growing industry, but no, me like many have nearly come to the end, straw price and availability, is one of many reasons, the rules regs, TB, infrustructure, working 24 seven for what? Most young people are wanting to work less hours and have more time "off"

Yes not sure why so many are getting so excited with current stock prices as they are not really that good when you take into account the cost of inputs and which most are still going up on weekly/monthly/ yearly basis.

Some crops on free draining land look as good as I’ve ever seen but most of this is usually chopped it will be interesting to see what they do with it this time

we have 95% drilled and 90% success some good crops . all will still be chopped apart from10 acre for small bales
we let some go and the baler brought us ryegrass and had been a twst to contain it

Yes I think that’s the reason most of this is chopped I’ve managed to get some before but I have to get a chap who’s black grass free to bale it and he can’t always do it
