Anyone finishing lambs on TMR in the shed? Have arable silage bales, red clover, combi and oats on farm, was thinking of bale of arable & bale red clover with grains & minerals mixed in the wagon daily might be good way to finish, just wondering if anyone at it.

Did try but it was too slow for us. Silage and meal. I think the secret to finishing lambs inside is get them fat as quick as possible before the feet start to be a problem, so a hopper full of pellets seem to suit us better.

They are buggers for wasting stuff as well
I fed brewers grains and sugarbeet once on it took too long and they were sorting through it and leaving some
I tried feeding whole barley with pellets when barley was £60/ton, the buggers spent all day eating the barley and left the pellets. I didn't dare just give them just barley in case they blew up, nowadays pellets out of a bin into a hopper is just so easy.

We looked into this - the most difficult thing for us was trying to find a small enough mixer for a reasonable price. The Jaylor mini mixers that everybody always recommends look lovely and fit the bill until you find out they are 11k a pop !! May as well buy a normal wagon ! Sorry to pry but what size wagon are you thinking of using vs amount of lambs ?

I think that getting them ready for sale is still the cheapest option. Anything that’s just a maintenance type feed needs to be fed outside really, it’s too dear to have lambs inside that aren’t motoring. I found trying to feed something cheaper meant they were on the place too long. I release your tmr looks good it’s just trying to get them to eat enough of it

I have done it in the past, we have the mixer for beef cattle anyway so gave it a go. Our lambs and ewes never see hard feed outside so we always struggled to get lambs onto hoppers or even to eat out of a trough. After killing lambs every year with barley poisoning we swapped over to tmr.

We bring them in the shed and feed a silage based ration with barley and a protein blend. Transition them over ten days up to around 1kg of barley/blend a day and the rest of the ration made up of silage and maybe a bit of hay.

Find that the lambs seem more content than when we feed on hoppers in the shed which I put down to more feed space, also worth noting that it is nearly all ram lambs that we house when grass runs out so they can bully each other off hoppers.

We find that the average weight gain is much more consistent (around 200-250grams a day) with smaller lambs and big lambs doing the same whilst on hoppers we always found that the big ones are probably doing 350 grams a day whilst the smaller or shy feeders are standing still.

One of the reasons was thinking if it yesterday, dealer has verti 500 that he’s struggling to move and I’ve been thinking of how to get what I have on farm into the lambs diet.
