Tractor road speed

While out today on the A134 road in west Norfolk I followed a New Holland T7 Blue Power - presumably a T7.270 or T7.315 - and a high-sided Smyth trailer. I know there are plenty of 50k tractors around, but my car speedo was reading 43mph when I was behind it, which by my maths is 70k. Is it possible to tweak a tractor this much? Or do I need to get my own speedo checked out...?!

Your true speed was probably 38 or 40. Still fast though.
Most 50k tractors I have driven will do 55; but 70, that's faster than my Fastrac which is limited to 40mph.

There used to be a speed sensor on the front axle that could be turned/disconnected that allowed auto command gearboxes max revs at top end. Heard of 40mph plus when it’s done.

Wonder how long the driveshaft bearing would cope with it?

Ground speed is taken off the radar and it's possible to fool this by altering the angle. I remember being told early on when autocomand's were released that the max mechanical speed of the gearbox was around 75k, must be some truth in that.

I followed a NH over several miles at a similar speed a few years ago in the Land Rover, well above the possible miss reading of the speed. As for my speedo being out, I only have to be very slightly above 30 In a local village for the speed sign to light upsi my speedo is pretty closely matched with that.

It's easy enough to figure out the un-governed top speed by just taking the speed to rpm ratio at 40 or 50k and then put in whatever the redline is on the engine.

For example a tractor that does 40k at 1400rpm will do 50 at 1700 and 60 at 2000, 2200 rpm which I believe is the redline gives you 65k.

Mine NH (PC gearbox) used to do 55kph but had it serviced and note it wont rev out in top now, sits at 2,200 so I only get 42-46kph, guess they did a software upgrade as I havent changed anything. Phoned up and enquired but they denied all knowledge.

Same trouble on my T7.210 AC, it used to settle down to 1750, now it needs 1850.

Not condoning tractors going that speed. But cars are capable of going faster than the speed limits in this country

It's up to the NUT on top of the seat to determine when HIGHER speed is safe and appropriate

Its not always up to the driver though. Try working for a contractor or large farm and being the only one that sticks to the law on speed and weights etc and see how long you last.
This is why trucks are limited and have tachos, set maintenance schedules etc.

Its the minority that f**k it up for everyone else.

Yup and why they are physically limited in most of Europe with strict penalties if you tinker
