I want to go and look at a high hour Rb16, what are the common issues to check on it?

Where do they wear? Is there any way of testing the hydrostatic system?

Do they do 40k on the road? Do they have a foot brake or is it only braking through the hydro system?

No foot brake only the hydro, check for leaks on the hydro motors, engines tend to get pretty hot on long road trips.suspension Bush's and king pins are wear points but fairly easy to replace. Other than that check general condition.
We ran a high houred rb16 for 4 years and it was faultless. Sold it for what I paid for it! Replaced it with another Bateman (rb25) also faultless.
Pretty sure it did 40k but long stints ( 10mins or so) saw engine temps rise worryingly but never caused a problem. They started mounting the engine reversely with the rad at the side of the machines later to help with this,

Get a later one with rad on side, as described.
Bought one a year ago, high hours, faultless so far(touch wood)

If you are doing any amount of roadwork go for an RB25.

Thanks for all the good info, I've read anything I can find about them on here but never seen anything mentioned about the rad

I do a lot of road work so I'll definitely check what rad setup it's got, it's a 2005 machine so I'd expect it's the later setup.

Check around the wheel motors if they are weeping oil they won't be long before they will need replacing.

Mine will only do 30k on 420/85/28. About 25k ish on 540/ 65/ 24.wheels

The RB 16 has a 4 cylinder JR engine 125 HP, the RB 25 has a JD 6 cylinder 175HP .
The rb 16 has manual levers on side for fill agitation ect, the 25 has electro valves.

yes electric motorized valves on the outside left where self fill agitation induction hopper controls.
But perhaps this is only an optional extra, not sure.

Our rb25 had manual valves the same as the 16 we had. 25 has more power but was still decent on fuel. We have an rb35 now which is really nice but it doesn't half sup some fuel

Mines manual as well , the post has been edited now but would love a picture of the electric version on a 25.

I was tempted by a second hand rb17 recently.....these were just produced for a short time?

I d go rb 26 if u can they have a lot more power for hills I was goin have a 16 and they told me not bother if on banks

Bit late to thread but once you know serial number or reg , phone Bateman office and talk with them . Pretty sure they will / can give you a history of the machine with regards work done to it / service etc and also will talk you through things to look for . Very helpful company .

So the only difference between a 16 and 25 is the engine then? Physically they are the same size and weight?
