I had a pair of Citroen nemo 1.4s and they wher exceptional, did 125k on each of them without a problem, but the newer 1.3s are prone to timing chain snapping

1.9tdi VW Caddy 2004-2006 or Daihatsu Fourtrak.
There’s a fella near here in East Yorkshire who keeps a few refurbished Fourtraks in stock.

Kangoo vans have served us well just have to remind Dad that is doesn’t have good ground clearance compared to a 4x4. A few local farmers bought Citroen berlingo’s and pleased with them.
We will always have a small van on farm, cheap to run, if only you could still get a 4x4 one now.

We have a Transit Connect. We got it at 3 years old with over 100k miles on it. I think that was 11 years ago and the only things it has needed apart from serving has been a cam sensor, tires and a battery. It’s been a great little run around.

Would age or miles put you off something? Would you buy something young with high miles or old with lower mileage. The transit connect above sounded a good purchase.

It will do very little miles here. Thinking below 5k per year. It's just for handyness. Missing not having old one.

Fiat panda 4x4s don't look too expensive and most will have been driven by grannies.

Its a bit the luck of the draw to be honest, either could be great. But I think I would tend to go for young with high mileage, unless I knew a bit of the history of the older lower mileage van.
Mine came from a TV aerial installation company so I don’t think it had too hard a life before coming to us, it has a really handy roof rack on it as well, which I will always look for on a van from now on having had one.

Van with sliding side doors is very useful, we have a Caddy maxi here, but a Berlingo seems equally as good.
Just a shout for the venerable VW PD engine as previously mentioned, we have a 2005 Passat estate on 190k miles with the AWX engine version. Everyone who uses it comments on the power and performance from a vehicle of that age. One owner full service history.....;)

Them Caddys were Spanish Seat based If I’m right. Were not a patch on VW cars of same era. 2004-2006 will definitely need welding and patching

No, pre 2004 were based on a Seat maybe but post 2004 were Golf based, galvanised and with a bombproof engine.
I still see my 2004 Caddy from time to time and honestly there’s not a single spot on it.

Oh the Inca based ones were not well built but had proper running gear from Golf mk3s etc. Well I know a few around here that have gone for 10 plate onwards etc Caddys after running Golfs and Jettas and Boras and all say they’re not the same as the cars and have gone on to run Transporters as vans.

Anyhow, nothing from last ten years will be a patch on something from the decade before that due to all the emissions VGTs, EGRs, SCRs etc on them before we start on electric power steering, ESPs, can bus etc etc!!!

I now run a Transporter that has done 140k in the last 5 years without a single spanner on it other than brake pads, tyres and 1 clutch.
