Wheat and Peas?

Ive got myself into an agreement with a friend, where I will be growing some feed winter wheat and selling it to him.

We were talking the other day that a few peas mixed in would be ideal...

Theres something that tells me if I put some peas in the mix, it's problematic to spray, it will knock the peas as well as the weeds...

Any ideas, comments, suggestions etc etc etc?

You will severely restrict herbicide options.

Peas are generally spring sown aren’t they, so are you planning to stitch them in to the winter wheat ?
Spring barley and peas are a good combination for whole crop.

I think stitching them in to a ww crop in the spring would be the only option and hope you don’t stimulate a flush of blw by doing so. Residual herbicides might be a problem?

How could you set up the combine for two diferent size crops ,,if the drum is open for peas ,the wheat will fly straight through unthrashed and if its closed for wheat ,the peas will be smashed to bits ,then during the growing season ,the peas will wrap round the wheat and strangle it untill it's all flat on the floor

Speak to Western Seeds about their 'CombiCrop' mixtures, which are doing just that. I think it would have to be a Spring cereal though.

They would say that pesticide & fertiliser inputs are much reduced anyway, so less of an issue with incompatibilities. Choice of varieties would be important to ensure evenness of ripening, etc.

If I was using much feed myself, or I had a reliable buyer contracted for it, I would be tempted to try some.

Restricted by herbicide and pesticides able to use?

By the time SW and peas are up and going at 80kg/ac the weeds won't stand a chance!

Far be it from me to lecture an organic farmer but just because they aren't above the canopy doesn't mean they aren't there Siddus. :wtf:

You're as bad as those hybrid barley salesmen claiming blackgrass can't survive under it.

Combining peas, ye gods. Must have more patience than me. Grow wheat and grow beans if you intend to combine them. Far less stressful. For wholecrop, no worries.

They aren't there in a conventional crop either then?

What I am saying is the peas and barley will out grow the weeds, smother them and they then become green manure!

Anybody would think you were still selling agrochems..... 🤣

If you want to mix cereals and peas I think you need to grow spring barley. Ww won’t work due to different sowing dates and weed burden.
For feeding without separating barley is a better balance also , in that respect s oats would be perfect but in practice they are later ripening like s wheat would be . W. Wheat like you say would be totally inappropriate to grow with peas which are spring sown plant , although they could be stitched in with a wide spaced drill in feb/ march the j guess, in a thin stand of wheat. nog something I would want to try with the cost of pea seed tho.

Pendimethalin is the best for weed control, i found ..combicrops tend to be better fungus wise, for some reason  less of one type of plant I guess ? mildew being the worst it.

They don't outgrow the weeds- they survive (and many thrive) quite happily under the canopy. They will often be there in a conventional crop. The times I have seen a whole manner of muck growing under an OSR, kale or barley canopy are too numerous to count. Even the thickest, angriest crop can have weeds underneath it. No issue if silaging but combining a crop infested with cleavers can get really really interesting when you're having to change a slip clutch in the blazing sun.
