AI Bulls

It's for heifers so was a bit afraid they'd be hard calving, especially with Jacot in both their pedigrees.

Would you use Galileo on heifers? (For me any Lim should be useable on heifers but unfortunately too many breeders have gone in the wrong direction.) I remember Harry had a half sister in the Royal Welsh a few years ago - one of the best heifers I've ever seen!
We`ve got heifers in calf to lorenzo and hamlet so i will let you know how we get on!

Could u b feeding something that’s making the calf grow big? 7 from 15 is a lot Jets calfs for me hadn’t enough quality. Iv heard of men using Lorenzo on heifers with no trouble, I personally wouldn’t with him being a jacot son. Cloughhead umpire has quality calfs and easy born

I have a heap of straws in store by an Umpire grandson, very easy calving but grow into good calves in days. Will sell some if anyone is interested.

A genuine question, no criticism intended: Why chance a Limmy bull on these heifers? Would a proven easy calving AA or similar not be a better bet? Eliminate risk of bad calving/Caesar/dead calf as much as possible? I can almost understand it for pedigrees but commercial heifers have the rest of their lives to breed a fancy calf.
This was the "conventional wisdom" I was told when we started keeping cows 7 years ago. We calved about 20 heifers, some AI'd to Limousin and some to AA and later some served by my own Limi bull. I had to help more of the AA's than the Limis. We therefore stick to Limis now, get a more valuable calf and touch wood little bother. Have used Conan, Galileo and Hamlet.

Aberdeen Angus?! Nooo!! My dad would be turning in his grave! There's only been a Lim bull here since 1976. Actually, seriously, they are pedigrees and should be fine to the right bull. I think purebreds have less calving problems than crossbreds.
It's usually the stock bull who serves the heifers but he's on his fourth season and he's got daughters coming through. His first daughters went to Ronick Hawk but I've only 2 straws left now so need an alternative. I've used Greensons Howlett, a polled Lim, previously but their conformation isn't too good.

Can I ask between Conan, Galileo and Hamlet which do you prefer for heifers? I have experience with Lodge Hamlet but not the other two.

Best confirmation and ease of calving?

I don't think there is much between them for conformation, Conan by a long way for calving ease IME.
They're also the same bloodline - Conan's father Objat is also grandsire to Galileo, while Objat's brother half Jacot is grandfather to Hamlet (as well as Netherhall Jackpot and father to Mereside Lorenzo)!

2 Estermate programme

Day 0 = cidr in + 2.5mls Receptal.
Day 7 = Remove cidr + 2mls Estermate.
Day 8 = 2mls Estermate.
Day 9 = 2.5mls Receptal.
Day 10 = Fixed ai.

Any1 tried this program? I started it on 27 March. 1 cow showing no signs of heat at all apart from slime on her tail this morning. No sweat or jumping. Should have ai’d last night but the ai man thought it could be a wasted straw

Not with double estrumate and would question the value of it. It’s a pretty standard protocol without the day 8 PG. Always serve of the back of it even if the AI man isn’t happy. Remember you are synchronising the egg to ovulate rather than necessary the cow to come bulling if that makes sense. A fair portion of cows with no obvious signs will hold to this. AI man don’t like these as they tend of have a lower conception rate but benefit for you is 100% submission rate and higher preg rate.

Are you using this for blanket synchs or problem cows?
