AI Bulls

Aberdeen Angus?! Nooo!! My dad would be turning in his grave! There's only been a Lim bull here since 1976. Actually, seriously, they are pedigrees and should be fine to the right bull. I think purebreds have less calving problems than crossbreds.
It's usually the stock bull who serves the heifers but he's on his fourth season and he's got daughters coming through. His first daughters went to Ronick Hawk but I've only 2 straws left now so need an alternative. I've used Greensons Howlett, a polled Lim, previously but their conformation isn't too good.

Ronick Hawk? That's a blast from the past!

He left some lovely calves from my harlequin suckler herd, gave them size, growth rate ... and all but one a good temperament.
Think I kept most of his heifers, and found they were good calvers and milkers.

Our 3 best families go back to a Ronick Hawk sired matriarch, we still have them, two 17 years old and one sixteen. They are what Limousins should be; milky, easy calved, with length and sufficient shape and good mothers. The breed needs more like him as opposed to these short, overly wide red blues.

Blanket sync. I’ll cover her with a cheaper straw tonight rather than wasting the procedure

If you are blanket synching then suggest you discuss the other protocols pros and concs with your vet. Your cidr protocol is fine for anoestrus cows but over kill for cycling and not going to be the most cost effective as it’s fairly expensive. Better looking at a pre synch + ovsynch type protocol. It will be the most cost effective and give the best results.

A genuine question, no criticism intended: Why chance a Limmy bull on these heifers? Would a proven easy calving AA or similar not be a better bet? Eliminate risk of bad calving/Caesar/dead calf as much as possible? I can almost understand it for pedigrees but commercial heifers have the rest of their lives to breed a fancy calf.

I find it amazing that some talk of not using a limmy on heifers when the whole point of them use to be that they were easy calved
Interested to know if the ones they have in France have calving problems or do they still calve ok ? @czechmate you keep them don't you ?

Exactly! Unfortunately some breeders have taken it upon themselves to breed red Belgians with double muscling genes, spurred on by the show cattle trade and it's spoiling the breed.

As far as I know the French Lims are still true to the breed, with maternal cows and bulls.
The destruction of the British lims gathered pace with a certain Vantastic. I also heard of a bull with the prefix that begins with Fox that threw uncalveable calves. I forget the name of the bull but you can guarantee he's still in heavy use.

Its all opinions isnt it....as a suckled calf producer i would say they are improving the breed...there were far more bulls at the feb sales to catch my eye than there have been for a while, but as i say...its all opinions!

Used Etudiant. French bull at the bailea herd. Throws a serious growth calf and width. Wouldn’t use him on heifers but liked him a lot. Some men want calving easy others only want a show calf. Agree that everyone has a different opinion. Be very boring if we all did the same thing.
