is the consensus then that it's worth sending back to horner?.... or should i buy a mudge recon job £150 or horner suregrip £250 (oil bath)...horner red arrow £270 (triple bearing)?
If your doing more than 5000 I'd buy a new one. If your doing 200 Put that one back together, get the fulcrum pin as close to where you think it was originally and carry on.

Supershear gauge looks very similar to the Lister one (just found a company in Australia selling Lister one). Heiniger gauge seems pretty fool proof...

Just thought if I had a gauge I'd be more inclined to service the handpiece more often, as replacing the post and cups is very easy and service kits are cheap
Trying to take over from Alex? He's bound to be due to retire soon lol.

Try and be fly. Rebuild it and see if it works...

Mudge recon will just be the same as a Horner service or recon.

For your use, stick with the oil bath - they are idiot proof and much more tolerant of neglect

Alec is my Jedi master! I don't know much, but what I do he taught me. He's got another 2-3 years before he gives up for good (but he has said that before!)
If you've got £10 to spare. Sign up to the Lojik shearing app for a month. A lot of good little tricks that may improve your knowledge. Worth it for any body wanting to get better. Cancel the subscription before month end or once you've finished the season or watched all the clips.

Alex is one of life's gentlemen! Not sure what age he is now, I only see him once a year and he brings an Octogenarian (ex farm rep) who probably keeps him young lol.

Hes 77 or 78. 80 is the end of the road - he was going to stop at 70 but decided to go on. Then it was 75 but he went on... There's someone up near Biggar supposed to be taking over the business, but I forget the name he said. Biggar is too far away to just nip up and get things, so he promised if I got my kit sorted out he would teach me all I needed to know. This is the first year I've not been upto his, I will need to call in once this virus blows over

True gent, I've a lot of time for him

When I took over here and gathered up everything lying around I've got 4 old Lister handpieces and one younger one which works fine for all I do. I was meaning to take the other 4 up and get him to check them over but didn't get round to it before this happened.

Send it back to Willie Horner. He'll sort it out. He's a good chap . Totally staright. He may do you a good price as youve only bought it and just shorn 80 with it.
As said before those handpieces are bomb proof. Whats the point of spending a couple of hundred on a new handpiece. I bought a recon Heiniger 3 years ago and its spot on.

As an aside... you any idea where to get the setting gauge for Lister handpiece?

You get heiniger and supershear ones no bother, but I can't find lister. Would a supershear do, seeing as they are the same company? (it's tallygrip handpieces I have)
I have a Lister tool but it's from the days of the old narrow combs so not sure if there's a difference. Two golden Lister handpieces here and the newer one gets so hot you can hardly hold it. It's been taken apart, cleaned, polished and it's still the same
