Ha ga if you quiet your welcome to come and help me finish mine only 120 ish left!

when I first got my kit I got a recon hand piece from Horner, it looked like yours, a bit of a festering old turd, not to say it would not have worked perfect but I rang them up and the took it back and I swapped it for a new sure grip the difference in price seemed worth itvs the second hand one.

as other have said new combs and cutters never seem just as sharp as ones that you get resharpened, then you may end up tightening them up more than you should and you just end up with a hot hand piece and jumpy sheep.
You too ; I reckon he sends that same old "reconditioned" handpiece to everybody, secure in the knowledge it will be coming back for an upgrade.
Perhaps it's a Horner family heirloom :).
I was hoping somebody even sillier than me would ask what exactly happens if the fulcrum post is a few thou' too high or low...

Well done mate! . . . I knew that you can do it!? More power to the tinkerers I say!!!
In a world of throw away items made to never be fiddled with (like modern cars) it's so good to do some manly stuff even if you sometimes don't win.
Had three young fellas at work this week (all nineteen or younger) standing around trying to get the ratchet of a socket set to turn the other way!!! Never had a toolset in their lives! I tell ya!? And they say mankind has made progress!

We need more people like Spin in our lives, the world is a much more colorful place!

"POWER TO TINKERERS!"

It doesn't matter if it's slightly out, it's just down to the handpiece running and cutting smoothly.

The trouble lie's once it's been used the fulcrum pin and cup wear where they contact when under tension. If you then adjust the fulcrum pin, you'll change the contact point which had worn into the cup. As the wear is uneven I'll affect the throw of the fork and the handpiece won't run or cut as smooth as it should.

good work, makes sense to me. do the bearing type hand pieces have a similar setup, i was tempted when i got mine (or sent back the turd and upgraded ha ha ), instead of a simple new one i was going to get a fancy used one

The front half is all the same on all handpieces. For occasional farmer use your better with a simple oil bath barrel. Keep them oiled and they take more abuse and being left out in shed. More to go wrong with the bearing type. Bearings can go especially if left out in damp environments a but they supposedly run smoother.
If your shearing thousands as a job, go for bearings. If your shearing a couple of hundred of your own ewes and dagging them couple times a year. Go simple oil bath, should last a life time.
