£150,000 combine

Tucano rotary, we run 560 but I’d have a look at the bigger 570/580 lot simpler than lexion but with a serious appetite in a compact combine plenty of 580s out there with 30ft headers now.

Another vote for the newer Tucano range with the ‘turret’ style unloading auger.
We’ve run a Tucano 480 for a few years (consistent spot rate of 40t/h in wheat) and get on really well with it, the 580 looks like it has some nice upgrades.
Regarding straw quality, the conventional drum and ‘APS’ system do the threshing and the majority of the separation. The rotor just centrifuges the last of the grain out, it doesn’t beat the straw to death like an Axial Flow.
Walker capacity is always a limiting factor in a combine, I wouldn’t want to go back to them if I had a choice.

Tracks seem to be a bit of a UK fashion in my view. I don't think I saw any combines on tracks when I visited Claas combine factory. One of farmers I was travelling with had just bought a new 770 on wheels.

I would want either tracks or 4wd for UK conditions.

Be a bit embarrassing not being able to move on a wet year

tracks are starting to appear on combines down here. Quite a few claas machines are on tracks secondhand. Not many of the rest yet but claas have been offering tracks far longer.

as much as we are bone dry at harvest tracks are better as the machine is as stable as duals, narrower for transport and works on sand hills much better than wheels

A friend of mine was until recently contract cutting 2000 acres with a T series John Deere ( I think it was a 660?). He got on very well with it and reckoned it was considerably better/faster than the Class 480 tt it replaced. If you have a good dealer John Deere don’t make a bad combine now either. To be fair anything other than an MF would likely be a good machine these days as long as it’s been looked after. I would think you would be as well to see what the driver thought as if he likes it you will likely have a lot fewer problems with it.

Have you considered buying a new one?

We were working with a similar budget and with the 130% capital allowance scheme we thought it made more sense to buy new with associated tax benefits.

After having a very brief conversation with our NH dealer on new prices of combines it’s not an option really as your talking about another £100,000 to get into a new machine. By going used with a £150,000 budget we can get into a 2500ac combine so it’ll have an easy life with us so we decided we’d prefer having double the capacity we actually need.

Can anybody put any figures on annual maintenance/repairs of the following machines Claas 760/770, NH 9080/9090, JD STS, Case 9230/9240.
Obviously it depends on so many variables but just trying to get an idea of which machines seem to cost more to keep going?

Think after this season we are going to take our combining back in hand for a few reasons. Anyway the budget would be £150,000 and we’d want to keep it 7 seasons. We are cutting 800ac of w wheat and 200ac of spring wheat or spring barley. We bale majority of the straw but it goes into bale choppers for livestock so aren’t bothered about having long pieces of straw as per a straw Walker machine. Average field size is around 30ac and we’d like to be able to get at least 2 done in a normal day or possibly 3 running longer hours. We’ve have JD and Case dealers within 15 mins. NH and claas are 40 mins but the claas dealer is exceptional with backup so 40 mins doesn’t bother us. MF is not an option for us as once bitten twice shy from years ago and our last MF was the reason we went to contractors! We’ve got underfloor grain drying so there’s no cap on tonnes we can cope with per day. Trailers are 14t in size and we have a seasoned combine driver working for us who’s keen to take it on. What machine please as we are a bit out of the loop.

lexion 600 and 70k change

I have a 35ft 770 on a 15 plate, it has done 1500 eng hrs now. Last year annual service was £1500, this year £6700. A full claas dealer service. I budget on an average of £4.50/acre
