Milk powders

I realise this is a bit of a open question because everyone seems to like different powders but I just wondered what other people get on with.

The powder I've been feeding is an..

18% protein
22% oil
35% skim

I've reared plenty of healthy strong calves on this powder but it's comparatively expensive.

I'm currently pricing

Feedco
NWF
MVF
Wynstay
Britmilk.

I only buy once a year and take 10t so I don't want to buy something I later regret.

Last few years used MVF hiperformer and got on well with it. Just switched to britmilk calf supreme 24prt 20 oil skim based. Bit soon to tell but seems ok. (Only swapped from MVF cos rep moved and couldn’t get a sensible price of MVF now)

There are 9 to 10 different powders listed on "Farmdeals" click on the icon top right on this page.

l picked up couple of bags of supreme yesterday, on a per ton basis, nearly £1,000 cheaper than the last time l asked !

we feed stored colostrum/waste milk, normally, just need to eke it out at the moment.

if my maths is correct, doubtful, at the mixing rate we would use, works out roughly 30p litre, not a lot less than some actual milk price.

nutritionally, is a powder 'better' than raw milk ? Ask a rep, 'of course it is'

I don't know why more people don't feed whole milk, that's all we use. It's so convenient and the calves do really well.
by the time you add in some waste milk/colostrum, you are not very far away.

that's with just the one, of many brands/strengths of milk replacers on the mkt.

disease issues, we acidify ours, some say it kills johnes, others say it doesn't, or pasteurisation

I'm aware of the strong Johnes link.

What's the data on the TB link?
My neighbour lost over 50 youngsters from feeding whole milk from a high cell count cow. It is unusual for cows to get it in the udder but not unheard of. My father said when him and his siblings had the pr*ck skin test for TB at school they were all positive. TB in milk was one of the reasons it was pasteurised.
