What are people's thoughts on drilling on the green into cover crops in the spring? I get the impression that the feeling is that it doesn't work well in general under normal UK conditions?
Given the late drilling date and the amount of rain that’s gone on them I’m pleasantly pleased with the state of my crops.
I do have two small fields that are below par but most are looking well.
How are others looking?
Wheat and barley below, no rape this year but locally it looks well.
Next year I have said that we will grow a patch of Sunflowers as a fund raiser for the local school. People can come and pick a bunch for a fiver or something like that. Need to work on the details. What variety would be a good bet? Not too tall, and not a massive head either. We had some last...
Good morning everybody,
Currently looking for advice and anything anybody has to offer will be greatly appreciated! I’m currently a store cattle farmer with mixed arable and grass land but I’m looking to expand so I’m thinking about taking out some of our grasses and putting more winter barley...
We have a product here (one called Vario) that has the same make up as dicurane used to have.
I have some here for use but never managed to get any on.
When I used to use it in the uk, it was always in November (usually seemed to be during children in need week) and actually I can’t remember how...
I am going to re-floor my Ifor Williams trailer with treated 6" x 1" timbers.. I am not going to screw them directly to the chassis crossmembers, I am going to put 4 x lengths of 2"x 2" across the full width of the trailer, and then screw down through, so the wooden crossmembers will be pinched...
......that ELMS farmers are going to be putting arable land into.
What is going to eat it all ?
Taxpayer subsidized lowland red meat production.
Flooding the market. Knackering the economy of the Less Favoured Areas, turning land to scrub. Can see the tourist industry welcoming that as a 'public...
Sorry, I know it has been thrashed about before, but it needs sorting.
Kath Dalmeny was on r4 this morning. When she speaks, people of influence listen.

Kath said, and I will have the words largely correct here...
Hi,
Got an old petit 3 ton tipper trailer i am going to restore, it still has the original wooden sides and floor which are in very good order. Whats the best thing to treat it with to both preserve it and make it look good?
Thanks

Ok I will admit I’m a sceptic to some extent regarding DD but will never say never....
so
current system plough and combi drill.
wold land in North Yorkshire, light bits of fluffy chalk but also more Clay bits with flint among it. Usually in the same field. Land will go very tight if run...
I’m looking at potentially switching some of my break crop into winter linseed next year.
Just wondering which varieties people would say are reliable? And possibly ones to avoid?!!
What is the best approach? Loads of them. Field has had Avadex and it looks to have slightly yellowed them? Will the Maya, Eagle mix do them in the spring? I'm worried they will get quite big....... Not on label for either of them but is on label for Ally..............
Any thoughts @They see me...
Thinking about having a go at my own seed dressing.
Ive a cleaner here which does an excellent job, so just need to sort the dressing side of things.
I have a 3"auger here on a tripod with a small hopper on the end.
I can measure the auger output easy enough so as to know how much dressing to...
This autumn and last year have well and truly shown the value of soil structure, and highlighted in particular where problems exist.
My farm is generally grade 3 heavy silty clay loam with flints, with a decent chunk at 55%- 60% forecast establishment rates, according to Soyl. It also has no...
Direct drilling on heavy clay soils is tricky. There is a lot of great advice out there, but from those on many different soil types. As direct drilling hinges on soil I thought it would be useful to have a thread based on heavy-ish clay soils alone.
just to kick it of; we have a Weaving GD...

repeated use of kerb and crawler conditions the soil to break it down quicker
is this a possible reason wheat rape rotation leads to more black grass
looking in to crawler use on winter linseed and came across this
