Uncertain times in farming at the moment.....texel ram lamb makes £200,000 at lanark today, great to see a bit of positivity and forward thinking, the buyers of this lamb obviously werent thinking of showing caution with brexit looming....all credit to them and also to the breeders.

Was up at the female sale last night, then took a wander round the tups... stood over the pen for a while as it was known to be the favourite.

Good tup, don't get me wrong. But honestly didn't think it was anything particularly special to warrant such a high price.
But that is, ofcourse, just my untrained eye. Fair play to the Wight family, all the same.

In general - it's nice to see stock at this sale are less extreme (heads and shoulders) than they were a few years ago.

I wonder if this is akin to the shenanigans that goes on in the classic car world? Auctioneer, seller and a couple of "buyers" all orchestrate a run on the prize entry in order to generate headlines and gee up business. Only a fraction of the money ever truly changes hands and the auctioneers conveniently forget to take the commission. Everyone knows it's happening, but nobody speaks of it in polite company.

I am always dubious of these kinds of numbers attached to a piece of livestock. Im sure the usual process is as follows. Someone like Andybk flogs a prized tup to a fellow sheep fancier like Unlacedgecko who is similarly well known in the industry. Said animal changes hands for 200K. Unlacedgecko then sells Andybk 3 prize winning ewes the total value of which is, funnily enough, 200K. Names are in papers and much prestige is gained for all concerned but the circle remains unbroken until a complete sheep muppet and novice with more money than sense arrives on the scene and buys a prize winning tup and two ewes from the two aforementioned gentlemen for 158K the following year because heck both of them sold some stunning animals the year before.

This, entirely

Joking aside I already had a neighbor come up to me this afternoon whilst I was worming lambs, to ask if they "were worth a fortune if I sold them" as they heard that a sheep just fetched 200k...
