The Texel Society need to step up! The rules need sorting, we heard last year that if a ram is thrown out of a breed sale for bad teeth etc if another breeder buys it they will be unable to register lambs to it???? If this is true, how is the buyer being penalised when they have bought the ram not knowing it has been thrown out. The ram should be deregistered. Hopefully this isn’t correct?

Pretty sure that rule only applies to failure of the wool inspection at the society national sales.

If a sheep fails the veterinary inspection for small balls or overshot, you’re probably right, they should be barred from being registered for pedigree breeding. That won’t stop individuals bending the rules outside the remit of society sales with those sheep though.

Is that to prevent peelers , like the beltie ? or is it open coats / mycotic ?

You are right it was for trimming! How many lambs do you see at the breed sales that have had their backs picked out?? By all means penalise the seller for trimming but no way should a buyer take the brunt of it, how does that work??

This is a very annoying senario really! I sell all my tups as ram lambs, due for the reason if they can't make tups as lambs they will never make shearlings! But.....when I sell tups everyone will tend to shy away from buying lambs cause 'they won't cover so many ewes' but can easily be half the price of a shearling tup so you could technically buy 2 lambs for the price of one shearling! (Spreading your risks) At the end of the day a commercial man will be selling lambs so if the sire made the grade at a lamb so should his progeny (my theory) but a farmer will rather go buy a shearling that might have been a eye sore as a lamb.....but given time and a lot of food and is now a acceptable shearling and would rather use it?.....got 8 ram lambs entered for Builth if anyone's looking for some beltex
