Is there a way to test if the starter is defo the cause off of the machine? After 2 months i doubt i could just rock up to the parts shop and give them a fudgeed starter back...

I would bet money on it, so many people do the same, chuck a crap starter on, then batteries and check connections then come on here or some other forum.

The market is flooded with junk starters that do not perform, Iskra/Mahle Gear reduction and Jubana are the only ones that are constantly good.

send me the lucas part number of what you fitted.
Its a good job i take pictures of this stuff... Hopefully you can get what you need from that image, else i'll get it tomorrow when it's light. Going to try to clean all the contacts on the block and everything first, cause i just cant bring myself to believe that a 2 month old brand new starter could pack up after not really having much use

Thats a crap one for sure, but i would need some numbers to go on as my quick search of 580G does not turn up alot and some look to have fiat power train and cummins engines but i suspect yours is a Davy brown engine so if i had to guess the normal 4.2kw Iskra i sell will be the one you want.

Well it had a new battery because the old one couldnt cope with cranking for more than about 15 seconds on a full charge with the old starter (which was buggered when we bought the thing). Replaced the battery at the same time as the starter motor, replaced the battery terminals as well because the old ones were rusted up quite badly. Honestly the whole digger is rusty and coroded, but the starter was working fine, and i hardly think a few days of sitting outside in this very calm spring weather would do anything to it. Was turning over slowly before, but easy start got it going OK, i just assumed the battery was going flat, perhaps it was the starter all along? When i jump started it with the 575 it turned over very nice and fast, and nearly even went without easy start!

same david brown engine as used in the 995 996 1390 1394 etc etc etc... Im told they are bulletproof engines, mine doesnt start well and breathes a lot but runs very nicely once it's going, and after its been started the first time it will start without easy start and without smoke.

All the more reason to fit a 4.2kw starter then so it spins over faster and hopefully not need easy start.

Have been in a similar position to yourself with several of our vehicles in the past. Changed no end of batteries, usually after 12 months to get things to start. Bought an Iskra off Aceengineering and it transformed one machine. Have now fitted 5 or 6 of his starters to other machines in the last few years and not bought any batteries since.

Well it was working fine on 12v before so I don't think so
I had considered this, hence my question, did it ever work. But then I thought 12V wouldn’t engage a 24V solenoid, so it wouldn’t spin at all. Highly unlikely to have a 12V solenoid on a 24V starter, but then never say never.
