Just a crazy thought but has anyone out there ever tried to ai there cow in the field?
Idea being to bring the ai man to the cow. Is there such a contraption that fits on the 3 point linkage could lure some cows to a feeding trough and have several locking heads on it to control cow needing served?
If it worked, it could mean no hassle having to bring in all the cows for 1 to be served. The main reason behind it would be to reduce stress on the animal thus better chances of holding to the ai
The more animals around the headlocking feeding trough device the more at ease the target animal would be ??

I've seen a video where by a beef herd on daily move walk through a crush every day to get to the next paddock. The cows wore moo calls and the crush was bluetoothed up, so caught any cows which needed served. They were drafted off to a holding pen and served from there.

Yes we have done a fair few in the summer in the cow catcher, much less hassle than bringing the lot in to the yard

Bull bes a great job surely but needs to be a good one if it's to keep up with ai.
Not to mention the safety risks that comes with a bull.
We've had bulls throwing excellent calves one year then blanks the next.
In what way are AI bulls good?
They are usually bought on a pretty limited budget and I've yet to see many that are any better than a fairly average bull within their breed.

Too many cows bulling at once is a bulls biggest limitation.
I can see why a pedigree breeder would want to use AI but for commercial a bull wins every time when the cows are out

Yes, we used to dabble in AI many years ago for various reasons, none of which was convenience.
And I can truthfully say some of the worst looking cows we ever had were AI bred.
Had some great ones too, but some of them - Jesus

I used to AI suckler cows behind a gate (strong!) in a small pen between 2 fields
Worked well with Herefords, less so with Welsh Blacks
Pasture was 160 acre field and a long walk to the yards so it was a good way to work

I ai outside in a pen on some ground that’s away from farm. They get a tinkle of corn a week before we start and they soon come charging in. I turn a teaser bull with a chin ball on to pick up heats, seems to be working well.

AI bulls aren’t likely to try to kill you
Don’t need feeding for the rest of the year,
Don’t need to be separated from their daughters,
Won’t jump the fence after the neighbours cows,
Won’t fight with the other bulls in the tank.
Won’t go lame at a critical point in the season.

Your points are well made. I have experienced all of those. But just one more.

AI bulls cannot find a cow in heat in the pitch dark when I am asleep.
