Saw first swallow in the workshop on Sunday morning (meaning I had to remove the window so they can have free access at all times), followed by hearing the first cuckoo in the afternoon.
Saturday morning saw 3 locally [ vale of York] we have none nesting here - despite putting in 3 'nests' for them.
Over full ponds have meant extra birds - this year we have Mallard ducklings hatched for the first time on our garden pond, and a goose nesting on a farm ponds' island.
Still no swallows here , hope they are on their way . Woodies a few , but jackdaws - over-run with the things . my blackbirds seem to prosper as well as , and better than some . My "office" window overlooks the yard where there is a stone trough . constantly running with spring water . I have a regular cock blackbird that comes for his ablutions daily . He stands on the edge of the trough and goes through the motions , but then he jumps right in - he swishes his wings and tail about for a time , and then ruffles all his feathers up and gives himself a full blown swim / plunge cold water bath . Doesn't seem to worry about the cold water - stays in for a short time , then climbs out , shaking himself dry . I suppose it's that or nothing - we don't run to warm showers for birds ! I had a breeding trio of pea- fowl that used to visit and mop up the spilled meal /squashed potato bits from under the telehandler wheels , but I haven't seen them for a few days . There's a neighbour who buys wild bird seed , and liberally spreads it about , so perhaps they prefer that to squashed potato !
More swallows arriving every day along with large numbers of geese, jackdaws, starlings and herring gulls!
Interesting to know what they're finding to eat in my bare pp.
First one seen yesterday, trying to get through the workshop window from the inside. Probably fed up with the weather here and wants to get back to Africa.
