Canadian Wheat

Wasn't there then another year, when growers who had initially joined in with the group onanism over Barrie, found that they only ended up with disappointingly small heaps, full with fusarium, in their stores? Like a ton to the acre of junk disappointing.. And they all vowed never again to fall for the marketing spin of the sellers of premium priced seed, ever; and so they tried growing borage instead.
Or Winterlin.

There are winter varieties of hard wheat here and they are relatively widely grown in the Paris basin. The premiums look attractive (last year 125 euros a T for full spec) but full spec is 15,5% protein and 220 hagberg and 78Kg bushel weight. The premiums vanish or at least fall off a cliff if you don't make spec. Below 13% protein there is no premium at all. So you risk a small heap and no bonus.

Why can't we grow canadian wheat in the uk?
It has been done, we were one of the growers for Gleadell when they were contracting to go into Hovis loafs. The main marketing ploy was the 100% British loaf. However it all fell down after 2012, a bad crop year left them with no choice but to import some Canadian grown red wheat and once the packaging changed it never went back to being 100% British across their whole range. I should say it was 100% British WHEAT, god knows where all the soya, emulsifiers and other shite came from.

I grew Barrie back in the days when it was main stream and I grew milling wheat. Was a very popular variety for manitoba. There was a variety called pastuer from Europe that was tried here. I grew it for a couple of years but the season here was too short and maturity very late. I see the main reason Canadian wheat wouldn’t be suited to uk conditions as being lack of intense sunlight and cooler. In a cloudy year or a smokey year from wild fires which is common wheat doesnt seem to yiekd as good as it looks. Hot dry sunny years our wheat will look average but yield well. wheat here seeded in early may will be Headed out in 7 weeks so how Would uk spring wheats preform in that situation
