Carlisle Beltex sale

Best of luck to the breeders, alot of hard work, time, effort and patience goes into producing quality stock.

Some will come on here and have a go out of jealousy, but it's a hobby for most breeders, imho it's a far better way of spending money breeding quality stock, opposed to drinking and peeing it up the wall.

587 Shearling rams averaged £1880.

Many were bought as commercial crossing tups. The Beltex really has cemented its place as the foremost terminal sire in the UK. In fact, in any prime lamb competition, no other breed stands a chance.

I became a little disillusioned with Carlisle despite selling there for a few years. From a spectators perspective with my bum on a seat I saw a lot of sheep down on their fetlocks or being driven one way round the ring to hide faults with gait or even manhandled to the center and held where there was no chance to observe gait at all. The society is so proud of being the biggest single breed sale that the inspection at the gate by society representatives seemed to err on the softer side of criticism.

But as crossing tups to produce high-value prime lambs, it's not vital that they are correct. All they need to do is tup as many ewes as possible and hopefully last a few seasons. Just like a Blueface Leicester.

They are not the sires of pure hill and upland breeds, so have completely different desirable traits.

A tup down on his fetlocks isn’t worth a crap. Nor are the ones that bounce on their hocks as they walk around. Might be alright in a Croft with 10 ewes. But not in a commercial setting of 1:40/1:50 in bunches of 150 ewes plus.

And the BFL isn’t for producing fat lambs… mule wethers are a byproduct
