Carrier and best disc for cutting straw

Hi,

I run a carrier 300 with crosscutter discs. Trailed model with extra weights and a rubberrunner in the back. I use this before drilling both winter and spring cereals. I do however have some issues with straw, mainly after oats. Seeding with a rapid usually leaves some spots where the seed doesnt germinate very well because of excessive straw. I wonder if the standard truecut discs or the new aggressive crosscutters would be better at chopping up and burying the straw?

Many zero tillers in Canada use a heavy harrow in the fall to break the straw up and spread it around. Even the best straw choppers struggle to get a perfect even spread and fine cut. I’ve done a small amount of direct drilling with an 1890 and my discs are very sharp due to the soil here. They still struggle to cut thru damp straw in the early mornings or later nights. A tine drill won’t give as accurate seeding depth but at least the seed will get contact with the soil.

As an after thought I have a horsch joker that came with standard cutaway discs. In damper times of the day the cut out notch would wrap with straw and carry the discs across the surface. I changed them to serrated ones and it’s alot better but not perfect.

Don't rule out frit fly damage. Wheat after oats is high risk, with the eggs laid in the straw.
