Deductions on load of wheat

We have had a deduction on a load of wheat £1.50 because it was 15.2% moisture ( all the other loads were below 14.5) I was talking to one of our grain buyers about it and he said he thought there was a .3% leeway and they could not charge unless it was above that, has anyone else heard of that?

They think it’s a buyers market & they can & are ripping growers off.
Our side were asleep at the wheel, when contracts were drawn up.
The contract is soooo one sided.

What are the NFU / CLA doing about a fare contract for us Growers ?

No the spec is the spec. There is no leeway in the standard contract. Did you retain a sample from loading the lorry? Have you tested it? Are you confident that the load was below 15%? If you are then tell the merchant that and that you want an independent retest. It has worked for us before.

Moisture is always claimed by 1/2% yet moisture content is quoted to the nearest 0.1%. It would be better for the grower if the deductions were made for each 0.1% of moisture, in @snipe’s case this would be a 60p deduction. Fairer imo.

Ask for that to be in the terms of the contract when you sell it.

Yes we have a sample. They are happy to retest their sample doing an oven test, £50 cost to us.

15.2% is nonsense, surely, particularly if you have already sent in a load of it that was below 14.5%?
