That’s what I’ve seen the alert system used for elsewhere - rapid messaging to a geographic area for abductions and escaped prisoners.

It’s already used like that in other places.
Firstly I do not trust whoever is in charge of it to be competent enough for it to be of any use to anyone, nor do I trust them not to use it for other self serving purposes such as making the threats that they do about TV licenses for example.
Secondly abductions, escaped prisoners, flash floods, earthquakes, forest fires etc etc are not something that ever happens here never mind often enough to warrant an alert system to warn you of such things. It will only ever be like the Road Closed signs everywhere when the road isn't even closed, the 40mph warnings on motorways for non existent debris, accidents, workers in road etc. Most often they are false alerts and in a short space of time are universally ignored.

I can only think that one of Boris's mates has had him convince someone the country needs to invest billions in such a thing and Boris gets a cut/favour/bung etc out of the deal. Whatever the reason it's a complete waste of time and stop using the "abducted neighbours children" as a reason because for the most part that would be a cause for celebration.

My phone vibrated as I was ratching around under the sprayer, I thought who the hell is that calling me now……
No notifications or messages, my phone just vibrated (had air pods in to 🤷🏼‍♂️)

I don’t think we should make light of missing kids, I ain’t got children but can well believe it would be any parents worst nightmare.
That said I have more faith in local communities passing the word around than a central government alert.

Thank you, that's the point I was trying to make. Local communities can't get the word out to everyone within 10/15/20 miles though, certainly not as quickly as electrons and radio waves can.

Yet if the opinions expressed on this forum are typical of the wider population, and I suspect they are, many will ignore the alerts and others will have switched them off somehow, I’m sure I’ve seen reference on here to the fact it can be done

I am a parent and grandparent, of course if it genuinely happened to my neighbours I would be horrified but I am comfortable joking about it because it just doesn't.
It is yet another of these "what if" scenarios that are designed purely to put you in fear of something that almost 100% of the time simply does not happen. There is nothing that warrants such a system being put in place.
In the last 60 years I can not think of a single abduction, escaped prisoner, flood, fire, nuclear attack etc etc happening locally. Maybe that's why the system seems not to have been turned on around here as there is absolutely no need for it.
