Disc vs Drum Mowers ???

Our Kverneland ( Taarup) drum mower is showing signs of its age. It has been a good bit of kit, but general signs of metal fatigue in the frame and lots of welding are taking their toll.

We are thinking of replacing it but what with? We have always had drum type mowers and are wondering about the pros and cons of drum vs disc?

Any advise welcome.

It mostly comes down to size. Drums not typically available over 2 metres. Discs can go to any size.
as far as a machine to cut grass goes there's no real difference

20 years ago l picked up a Claas Corto 3m drum mower for handy money at a retirement auction (l was the only bid) and ran it alongside my 3m disco.
lf you want to shave the ground or in lodged grass the drum did a better job.
But if you prefer a bit of a stubble or in really heavy crops the disc was superior and faster.
However after 12 or so seasons the Corto chewed into a concrete strainer that some clown left on a headland and though repaired was never the same again and was sold for parts the following year. The disco at 21 years old is still mowing albeit in a back up role nowadays.
So in conclusion l would say if happy with a 2m cut and doing mostly your own ground go drum. If on hire and want wider go disc.

Vicon certainly made a 4 drum model. This is one I sold earlier this year

Unpacks and folds up nice and neat that. I like a disc mower but I don't like taking it into ditches that are not so well gathered. Or more likely not at all..
