Docks in kale

I have a game keeper friend who has asked is it possible to control docks in brassica / kale ?

Yeah he could pull them out by hand.

there is an expensive spray that you can use, or just brush/wipe some r-up on them by hand.

we used to have a dock puller tool, like a long straight jemmy bar, with a cross piece, to use your foot, to push it into soil, to lever dock root out.

Never saw it used for that, but it was a damn good wire strainer !

I can't remember if the products I have in mind are even legal on kale let alone if they will touch docks.

You must practice good seed bed hygiene (stale seed bed over winter may be useful) and preparation for kale or any other game crop as herbicide options are limited. A coarse seed bed will give a staggered/uneven germination of the kale and you'll be on a hiding to nothing from the outset. That said, some weeds do grow up quite tall and form useful cover and food for the birds and the bees.

there's only 1 legal spray left for that ? And timing has to be spot on, or else.

used to grow a lot of forage rape for summer feeding, fat hen was the problem weed, could get to 6ft high, OM called it bacon weed, reckoned it came in the pig feed.

in any other crop, dead easy to control. The cows would eat the seed heads quite happily, but we were getting problems with water, in the milk, read some Australian research that said that was a problem.

Changed things around, and only grow rape behind cereals, to outwinter on, it isn't a problem then.

Are they?

Very nearly lost 3% of my SFP a few years back. Grew half field of kale, half field of swedes as usual and sprayed the lot with Sultan. Only had an EAMU for one of them. Can’t remember which way round.
Got lucky in that it had recently been given a new MAPP number at the time. Old one could do both but new one couldn’t and supplier vouched for me that it would have been old number stock they wanted to use up before deadline on supplying it came into force but in all honesty I don’t know if that was the case or not.

Been using Sprinbok ever since but doesn’t cover that many weeds.
