Am I missing something, surely any country should supply as much food of it’s own as possible so not be too reliant on imports , which could go short ,at anytime. All it takes is a natural disaster somewhere or another Putin and supply is out the window. Surely the energy crisis highlighted this fact. Lessons learned from 2 world wars have been forgotten.
The UK already produces a lot of food, doesn't it?
I get what you are saying but I don't think it's a simple problem to solve.
How do you make sure that the right things are produced in the right quantities at a price that allows the whole chain to make money and that the consumer can afford?

Thats what subsidies and marketing boards were introduced to try and balance supply and demand.

Farming has excelled in driving increased production over the last 60+ years leading to the consumer spending a steadily reducing percentage of their income on food.
Like everything else, this is changing.

How it will continue to change, beyond my abilities to try and imagine, except that for this country, it is unlikely that we will see real hunger scarcity, unless there is a world changing catastrophe, but that is a definite risk.

Meanwhile in France they have laws protecting food producers from supermarket power that ban sale for below COP. And here we have the genius Hunt demanding supermarkets screw the remaining producers until we’ve no food left. Him and Sunak really are quite the comedy double act.

Comedy double act?
What you’re talking about above affects peoples lives and jobs, as well as the nation’s food security, the fact that they’re clowns doesn’t make them funny

Of course English caulie is in season now.

Plant late July grows a big frame, which reduces over winter. Top dress late Feb harvest late March to early June, when March planted crops become available.

Sadly this year the over wintered caulie got a kicking from minus 9C frosts.
Not many locally chancing over winter cauli and sweetheart now with the cost of production and low yield if any yield at all. Spain seems to take over supply from December to June/July
