A couple of years ago we did a long distance ride north of Brasov in Transylvania. Very open countryside and just small farms with horses and carts and passed one farmer scything his hay. One of the village farms we stayed in were very proud of the fact that they were the largest in the village, with about 30 acres and they had two tractors. They were amazed when I finally admitted how much we (700) and friends we were with (1500) farm.

Brasov it's on high altidudine so it's not suitable for growing corn or wheat, I don't think the terrain helps, so most farms are animal farms. I guess it was a poor village, or people weren't interested in agriculture, in Romania you'll find many farms above 500 ha, or even 10.000 ha. The average farmer who has modern tractors and equipment has about ~150 ha. So it's not such a big deal here to have 300 ha. For example Insula Mare a Brăilei, (Great Braila Island) has over 60.000 ha. There are many small farms like that in my country, people are doing it more like a hobby, they don't make a fortune of it, they just work till they grow very old and get disabled. I had a man in my village who had 2 u445 rebuild by him and he was working alone about 10 ha. He was a bit old, 78 when he passed away but he always said he would compete and out overrun us if he was younger :)

We were surprised by how open the countryside was. For five days we rode through empty countryside with no fields or gates, just the occasional summer shepherd camps and the only cultivated land was just outside the villages.
