Feed barriers

Have had some feed barriers made and am thinking of putting a 20' concrete panel across the bay and sitting the barrier on top .
I'm sure someone else would have done the same or similar ....question .... any advice on the height of the panel and thickness.?
I was thinking of 500mm high and 150mm thick .....any thoughts welcome

We used a 100mm panel and it's plenty strong enough for cattle.

We got them 600mm deep, and poured 125mm of concrete on the side where the cattle are standing leaving 475mm of panel height plus 60mm box section that makes up the bottom bar of the barrier.
This leaves 535mm (or 21) inches for the cattle to reach over.
The feed passage is about 4 inches higher than the scrape passage where the cattle stand, so there is a 430mm (17inch) retainer for silage on the feed passage side.

I've found this to be about optimum to allow both cows and weaned suckled calves to lick the concrete making the shed usable for any sized stock, it's also generally too high for week old calves to want to jump through and lay on the silage.
We had a lower barrier and the calves went though it from about a day old.

If you're getting barriers made 20ft will be fine as long as you fix them to the panel at a couple of points, they will eventually break if you just fix them at the ends, you can't realistically expect a 20ft of 2.5 inch box to be a match of 8 hungry cows.

We bought 1200mm panels and cut them to 500 and 700mm. Used 700 to form outside trough on angle. Works well. 150mm concrete in bottom then blue plastic sheet.

I didn’t use panels, put the barriers on 150 mm wide concrete blocks.
