Feeding store cattle

What are folks feeding store on to let them grow a bit of frame?

beef bred cattle, sim, char, lim and blue cross heifers and steers

7-12 month old sorta stuff.

currently on ad-lib round bale silage and a few KG rolled barley a day.

wondering if there is a cheaper or better way. Or what other folks do.

once they get on towards 400kg we tend to slip them thru into the fattening pen on ad-lib barley and silage

Poor grass/maize 50%/50%. 2 kg barley, bit of Rapemeal. First attempt with maize. Seem to be getting some frame on them. Maybe getting too fat before weight.
Few to get pre moved tested and into store ring, we shall see

If there not going out ,wouldn’t the op be better pushing them from the outset?
Those breeds will get frame and always be above the abattoir minimum weight
I would say get the protein in the ration balanced ,and feed as much barley with the silage to get the best feed conversion efficiency ,then the overall cost of production would be cheaper.

1/2 ton of 60% and 1/2 ton of 32% per about 25 ton mixed as per advice of chap selling me what can only be described as brick dust.

Do you reckon we’re anywhere near with protein or not??

Probably need to get the silage analysed. Barley from memory is only about 11%. would think overall protein needs to be @ 16 % until 12/13 months then down to 14% in the finishing stage with as much energy in the diet as possible.
