Fert spinners for dummies

I know nothing about them having been all liquid fert forever. However, I'm now looking at a bit pile of urea bags. I do have a spreader, but it's very old, and partially doesn't work (won't register a speed reading so can't use the box).

Anyway, a new one is probably out of the question, but what do I look for?

Ideally put 3 tonnes in it, and spread at 36m.

How vital are weigh cells?

Seen a tidy looking kuhn axis 40.1 not far away, but no idea if they are any good.

Any help much appreciated!

I’ve no experience of 36m and haven’t dread urea for a long time. I think all the mainline makes are good. My KRM is just about to start its 10th year. As far as weigh cells are concerned I think that of all the technology you can buy they are probably the one that gives the quickest return on investment. Spreading 36m means a lot to do definitely go with weigh cells

I never had the ability to static calibrate my previous spreader. Just set by the book and keep tweaking the setting when putting more in, guessing what area I had actually covered.

It's basically the same thing happening now, but the computer is far far better at doing it accurately.

Can I ask why ?
I'm not a ballistics expert by any means, but urea is quite light, no matter what discs or disc speed you have it just won't travel that far. The product I use will go 18m at a push, Yara Bela or Extran travels 25m or so with the same machine.

I will stand corrected of course if anyone uses a urea product that will go further.

No idea what product it will be but there's a big contract farming outfit round here that run at 36m and spread bulk urea and yes I've seen a few messes but I've also seen them spreading on some very windy days
