Ford 4600 4WD Carraro axle halfshaft replacement

Our 1980 Ford 4600 4WD fitted with a Carraro centre drive axle has managed to wreck a halfshaft quite dramatically. In short, the yoke on the outer end of the right hand side inner (longer) halfshaft has failed so the whole halfshaft assembly will need to be replaced.

What we're struggling with is finding out the following:

1) What holds the halfshaft in the diff/crownwheel assembly? Is it just a circlip or will we need to disassemble the diff itself?

2) Will the halfshaft and universal joint assembly come out through the middle of the swivel hub if we take the planetary reduction unit off? Or does the whole swivel have to come off

3) Does anyone have a link to a PDF service manual for the 4600 series? I don't mind paying but would rather a confirmation from someone who's ordered one before

Usually the half shaft is secured to the planetary in the hub and then just sits in the diff with no retention.
Remove hub king pins and track rod end and the whole hub will come away, the half shaft should just pull out of the axle. You could take the planetary cover off first and disconnect halfshaft, pull the hub off, leaving the half shaft, then pull the half shaft out.

So, to confirm the swivel hub has to come off to pull the halfshaft? You can't pull the halfshaft through the hub at all?

Pretty simple really drain oil, take hub end plate bolts out, remove planet gears, circlip off shaft sun gear and spacer off shaft, loosen big hub nut with special box spanner or chisel, hub off, take track rod end off knuckle, loosen king pin bolts top and bottom, take king pins out ( use a chisel in flogging slots provided ) take hub knuckle off
To take half shaft out of axle beam there’s a stud top and bottom with a 17mm check nut on an allen stud to take out may have plastic caps on
Axle is a Carrero AE 2 loads of second hand spares for them also used on Leyand Marshall DB Case

Quick update:

Thanks for all the advice, a new shaft was sourced from a local breaker, however we couldn't find any replacement seals and trunnions at any of our local Ford/CNH dealers. Luckily @startinghandle 's suggestion of HES turned out to be a good shout, and they've been able to source the parts direct from Carraro, but with a fairly long lead time.

That hub nut needs to be tight

Why are seals a problem?

Any cnh dealer will get them quicker than coming from carraro Italy!

Vap bepco and sparex will also have them in stock I'm sure!

You'd think so, but we tried both local New Holland dealers and both said that the trunnion bearing seals were no longer available from them, despite us offering both original and superseded part numbers, and none of the online catalogues for Sparex etc listed them either. What really doesn't help with searching is how various specialists seem to have issues with spelling the name "Carraro" correctly

The hub side drive shaft seal Bepco dont have but according to vap its 83930307 size 62mm x 40 x 10 double lip nothing special at all.

Sparex list one if you put in the seal size and they recognise the 83830306 ford number so could have ordered them both from sparex.

What do you actually mean by "trunnions"? cause i thought you was doing half shaft/drive shaft?

Thanks for the further info.

To be clear, what we've ordered are replacement parts for the top and bottom swivels of the hub knuckle shown above. I think my old man's ordered up the shaft seals with no bother (as everyone seems to carry those) but couldn't find the pins, taper roller bearings, shims and seals to refurb the swivels while everything is apart. Its a loader tractor and it looks like the top and bottom pins have taken a bit of a battering. He's happy with the lead times either way, as it gives him an excuse to run in our newly rebuilt TEF-20 on light fetching and carrying duties in the mean time.

Bepco list the king pins/swivel pins but i didnt see any bearings IMO then again i wasn't really looking for them at the time IMO.
