Heritage/Ancient grain seed

Not sure if this is the right category but does anyone know where/who sells heritage/ancient grain seeds (ideally in smaller quantities [25kg sacks])
Looking for wheat, rye, spelt, barley and oats. Don't want import grain, needs to be grown in the UK.

I see a fair few websites selling heritage flour but none selling grain.

Based in the Midlands but I'm sure shipping wouldn't be an issue.

Thanks.

Are you a member of BASE UK? Wildfarmed might be worth a look too.

Near to you, try Cotswold Seeds - I'm not sure they sell any, but they would certainly know where does.

What wheat varieties are you looking for?
I know someone growing spelt.

If you have cultivar names in mind check the national list for addresses of maintainers: https://assets.publishing.service.g...ds_Gazette_Special_Edition_July_2024_v4.0.ods

Technically only cultivars on the national list can be traded in the UK. Conservation cultivars (a special list for non-commerial ones) are:

Just out of curiosity, do the old varieties get kept in a seed bank or do they just go extinct?

I know there is a Global Seed Vault in the Arctic, but it can't hold every variety of every crop, plant and tree....?

The old PBI varieties all began with a 'Maris' prefix, and there will be an extensive list of them somewhere dating from the 1920's.
But the only one I've encountered recently (apart from spuds) is Maris Bead, a tic bean first listed in 1962 which is still marketed by Churches of Bure.

Maris Otter is regularly grown around here for artisan breweries.

Google GRU John Innes Centre, think they have 20 000 or more wheat lines. They will be pleased to supply, but probably only 50 seeds or so of any line.

Do you think they would have WW Cappelle.
I would like to get some seed.

Would definitely have Cappelle. But they have a limited supply, and have to multiply it every few years, in a glasshouse, so it's a lot of work.

I will get in touch with them. I would like to see some growing up.
Before I planted any, do you think they would allow this to happen?

I asked for and received 50 seeds of square heads and another heritage variety. Multiplied in my garden, then ultimately a 3m x 100m strip, or maybe it was 6m wide, in a crop of oats to keep it away from unknown hostile herbicides. Looked pretty. Grew tall. I mowed it and stopped it. Can't remember where I put the seed but probably have a 10kg sack. Not available from me though.
