This trend for big flock dispersals at the moment is slightly worrying. There are umpteen flocks all going under the hammer this next month all over the place.

Exactly! This sort of thing I do find worrying.

How come? Age I assume a fair few will be? Or tenants and the land sold off.

Age is the reason I know of a few flock’s over 300 have dispersed the last few years..

I was talking too a few up north this last autumn at various markets on the borders and upwards. They weren’t all old men that were packing up the ewes or drastically reducing them. But the landlords want too plant trees so the sheep have too go. Very short sighted as far as I can see but who knows?

That’s what I meant by land sold off, only dairy and silage ground has been sold for that around here, 1 block of 140 acre on the side of a cliff for trees

I just hope in 20 years I’ll be in a position too laugh my socks off at the ministry when they realise that “their predecessors may have proceeded in an unwise direction”

I’d happily sell someone 900 at that price. I’ll start again! But I don’t think it likely!

I don’t get why all these flock dispersals are going on as inlamb ewes really it’s possibly the least efficient way too get a return on your investment… way more money to be had too lamb them down JD sell with lambs are foot or too finish everything and sell them as they come fit cull or as breeders…

I have just sold some broken mouth scotch mules (but only 5 crop ewes this time ) for £145 delivered last night 20 miles away. scanned at 250%, only had the advert up for 36 hours and sold them. I'm happy with that because would have been worth £90-£100 in October.

Some of the high estimates were made before Christmas when better lambs were making £150+ and better ewes were costing £200 in autumn. In theory a ewe with twins was potentially going to be worth £500, but life isn't like that and I expect 180-200 would get most.

Got a hay delivery last week and the bloke was telling me that he wasn't as busy as he was. Example he gave was a valley near Selkirk where he used to take 30 loads a year. He'd delivered two up there this time.

Things are changing but it suggests to me that those who are willing and able to keep cows and ewes should definitely keep going.

You can tell that by the numbers of store lambs forward. Lots of sales were short that last 1000 lambs

On top of that Scanning down on most farms nationwide, a lot of ewes culled as prices were high, flocks packing up etc…

I hear there are some in-lamb ewes that might be available for £300.
