Hi guys
I have a John Deere 550 round baler and I am after a grass kit believe it’s a knife to keep grass from wrapping round the bottom roller or at least help I can’t seem to find one wondered if any one had a old scrap baler with the kit on it or even knew what I was on about! Cheers Ryan

Your after the square sectioned bar that adjusts up to the starter roller. Has your baler got the mounting brackets in place?

Do you have metal starter bars or the later rubber covered ones?

It's a long while since we ran 550's so any spare ones we had may have been put to other 'uses' since then. I'll have a look when I'm back at the yard later.

I guess we've still an instruction/parts book to show you what you're after.

If you had a parts book please do send me a pic of the set up I need that would be brill

It's all relativè - when they first came out they were head and shoulders above the competition. We'd been baling silage with balers that were designed before round bale silage was even thought about.
They do need to be set up right or, as you say, they could be a right pain in the @rse.
I used to wrap bales behind one of those , when they jammed it in between that bottom roller, you could spend hours pulling till you're arm fell off, just seeing those pictures of that baler with the open tail gate has made me come over all faint and ill. I bet I have nightmares tonight now.

I think I may have one from donkeys years ago when we ran a 550, I'll check in the morning.
I can picture what you want it's a square or nearly square piece of metal bar probably 2inchs wide by 1 and a half deep and has an L shaped bracket on either end and is bolted in by two coach head bolts either end.

I used to drive one in the school holidays as a boy on a zetor which was ace because when it did jam you could put the tractor pto into reverse and clear the blockage saved a lot of sweat and swearing.

I have spent many an hour cutting grass off that roller,I had a baler with the square scraper bar on but it still wrapped around the roller and bent the scraper bar away, when they went well they could crack on but sticky rye grass and a hot day could be a nightmare but knock pto out push a lump up in front it started better but not always.

Happy to see many others share the love/hate i have for the 550.. I have had more time rolling out part bales and unblocking the thing than i have had bailing and other days its faultless..

I knew we had a picture of a 550 in action from 'back n the day' somewhere - it turned out to be more like an exercise to plot the 'development of the round baler in Britain'(1976 - present)

What a revelation the 520 must have been compared to the JD

Used to carry a pitchfork in cab wen we had a 550,

made pushing blockages out much easier.

best thing we did was part ex it for a well worn NH644
