Our keltec cuts through very dry chopped hay ledge no problem. Good plastic retention too but is heavier and bigger than the tanco. I would only use a keltec in our sheds

Have to say we sold out tanco, just lost the plastic or net into the diet feeder too many times. Tried for two months but just couldn’t hold the plastic 100%, tried all sorts of ways and spoke to a few users but in the end had to admit defeat and changed it for a big grab that lifts the whole bale into the feeder.

Tried a s/h keltec and wouldn't cut suspect ram seals but wondered if ram seals were replaced would cope with drier stuff. Sales blurb claims it'll cut straw :scratchhead:

ours is second hand and only thing i sort of fear wuld be soft damp fresh grass, not sure if the clamp would grab it but any bales dry, wet rushes fresh secondcut has been grand

Did you try any other models to see of there was any difference in plastic loss

I use a Tanco on about 800 bales a year, very rarely drops the plastic, the really annoying thing is the last pice of net (or the first piece when the baler does it) unless it happens to be in the correct place the knife cuts it off and it disappears into the trough where it waits until the cows sort it out as it is usually impossible to pull out.

I guess that this is the problem with all of the cutters though.

I always slash the ends of the plastic before I pick them up - typically getting several off the heap and putting them ready on the ground, approach the bale so that the plastic keeper is on the top of the bale i.e. tines vertical.

If i don't bother to slash the ends then the 'pocket' of wrap created as the bale falls apart will often carry the plastic into the trough amid much cursing

Tanco here we have not tried any other to compare, never go without it , feed out 10 11 a day. We used to load a diet feeder for a few winters, we had to cut a diagonal slice on each end of the bale when loading it to avoid wrap going in. Done my share of fishing wrap out in the begining , all fed on the floor now and our hands ar beter for it also 😂
