Krone vp1500 combi

Looking at getting a combi to save some time , running a VP1500 at the moment. Looking at videos of combi packs , do you have to shut off the pto to transfer the bale to wrapper table? Any other advice / experience regarding these combi’s . Also recommended hp on hills , as I think they are heavy , would a 6430 , 6630 , 6930 be better handle it , bearing in mind the tractor has to operate other implements to , ( mower , rake , conventional baler etc )
Thanks

I have one....and I love it.

Pto stays on when transferring a bale, just like with your Varipack when dropping a bale. They have all on-board hydraulics to run transfer and wrapper.. They take little hp to drive without chopping (80hp would be fine on a flat field) though with a full set of knives in they will make the tractor work a lot harder, just like any baler does. Mine travels surprisingly well on soft ground, and I cleared a field a 4wd self propelled forager couldn't travel on a few nights ago. However, like any combination baler, they are heavy, and for big hills ideally you need a heavier tractor. With a 1 ton silage bale in the wrapper it will be lifting the tractor drawbar, and as you say, they are I belive 5 or 6 tons, they are near as damn it 3m wide, and have a wicked tail swing to catch gates with. I pull mine with a Case Puma, and on our Lake District hills I wouldn't want a smaller tractor.

Ok , on the videos it appears the slats stop during transfer , which is what had me puzzled , good to know , could not stand having to stop the pto every bale , another local has a khun Ibio and has to do that to wrap!

The vp1500 I used to have stopped itself automatically when the back door opened. I used to drop the revs when closing it so it didn't bang as loud when it re engaged

It was a very soft baler and I was glad to see the back of it.

How does the bales compared outa the chain and slat or roller?

Depends on the model. Krone do variable chamber chain-and-slat which rolls tight from the centre like a belt baler does, and they do fixed chamber chain-and-slat, which in all intents and purposes behaves like a roller baler.
The variable chamber can make a v heavy bale just like a belt baler can, however it can bale anything you can drive over, no matter how slippery shiny and dry or soggy and wet.

So are the new krone balers a good machine or troublesome? Them 1s that nonstop baling would be some touch on level ground

Bales look good but not tight by modern standards. It was a variable size chamber with chain and slats. I think the newer belt and slat are much better but I still wouldn't buy one........
They are a variable chamber, therefore the outside layers are near enough the softest with having less time, less turns and no other layers pushing down.... just like a belt baler...still plenty in them like any belt baler.
Also very sensitive to row shape going in the front...just like a belt baler.

However, if I was changing now I would probably be most tempted by the Kuhn Fbp roller combo baler.

I believe @DrDunc runs a Krone Comprima and likes it
Aye, mines the standard "farmer" spec, not the heavier built and faster "xtreme".

Makes a very heavy bale that's a good shape if you drive it properly.

Need to watch the pickup reel closely to prevent blockages when in heavy rows of long damp grass. Often dropping the floor won't clear lumps taken in from the side augurs. You need to then manual crank the knives out on mine for that.

Don't know how the output compares to the new Kuhn or McHale, but 5 years ago there wasn't anything that put as much into a bale or do it as quickly.

I've no plans to change mine any time soon

Do my own and a couple of thousand for neighbouring farms, and about 1200 bale of straw a year

Enough that the baler paid for itself in less than 3 years. Means this wee hill farm has its own machinery bought and paid for, and no annual huge cheque to a contractor

Winter fodder costs the netwrap and my time, and I earn a few thousand with the baler as a bonus.

I always fancied buyin a baler to contract but competition is pretty fierce round here with ppl cuttin prices i dont think id get much work apart from jobs no1 else wants.
