You'd be better with a tier 2 64 or 7490

I guess it depends what you intend doing with it, and what your budget is
An 8130 is an old tractor now, good engines, rest of it not particularly reliable. (We had one, it was known as 'the camel')

8260 is a big old donkey, Power shift only iirc. It is a good old lugger in a big field, it'll do your head in as a runabout though. Dynashift a bit more usable, but not available on a 60

out of interest what age & money ?
I don't really mind what age it is cause I personally prefer the older mechanical injection type tractors instead of the newer common rail engines, we have a 6465 tier 3, a good reliable tractor, but isn't the best pulling 2300gallon tanker up the steep hills. there is a lot of wheel slip and tyres are good on it. At least if u want more power from the older engines, all you have to do is twist a bolt on fuel pump to leave in more fuel to engine. Price point would be 16-24 grand roughly for an MF 8130 or 8260.

Thanks, i intend on using it for slurry, pulling a 2300g hispec tanker for the contracting. I thought some 8260's did come with dynashift, they are a nicer tractor alright especially with their 8 and half ton weight.

A 8130 would be more like a 8220 I love my 8130 been great for me but got a 7480 and 6485 dynashift to do the bulk of work now 8130 spreads slurry and sprays mainly now can’t see me ever selling it tbh
ya, those 6.0 litre perkins engines will last forever once maintained regularly, i know a few fellas that have clocked nearly 40k hours on their MF 6290.

Ya, ur right about the powershift only on the 8260 model, i might look into the mf 8250, has the same engines as the 8260 and close enough in weight too. thank u for that.

24k would get you a very nice 64 or 7490.
Biggest 82 with Dynashift is an 8240, which is a foot shorter & a good ton lighter than an 8260.

Think you'll be disappointed on thinking the extra weight of a tractor will help much on a tanker. Drove a friend's MF 8260 last year, yes it was big and stable, but pulling a tanker up a steepish gravel track, it wasn't much better than my 6475. Think they get too heavy to propel themselves, flat land arable tractors. Got it stuck down the bottom of a slope power harrowing.

Jesus, i wasn't expecting them to be that bad, so its more or less down to how much horsepower and torque they have so, it isnt all about the weight afterall. thank u very much for that advice.

I pulled my 2600 hispec with my 8130 for a while never had a problem and only ever ran pump in 750 pto that 8130 would pull tank at 1000 engine revs anywhere my 7480 needs 540pto and more Rev but the vario is great on hills

I had the chance to buy the 8260, don't rate the full powershift gearbox for road haulage. And needs to be driven with a good bit of mechanical sympathy, giving it time to change gears. .try driving with a load behind before you buy is my advice.

thanks for the advice, I will agree with u that it is best to test out the tractor pulling a tanker or something before purchasing. I think the 8130 or 8220 would be my best pick.

We have both 8280 and 8240 both with powershift they are great old tractors, in my opinion l would not by an 8260 very heavy for the weight there is a big difference in the drive line weight between the the 8240 and 8260 if you want the weight and traction of an 8260 then buy an 8280 they are gutsy old torque monsters, they could pull the titanic of the ocean floor

Thank you. What about an Massey ferguson 8250 with dynashift(not powershift). I am still trying to make up my mind what I will purchase. I am looking between a 6290,8220,8250 and 8130. Which is best in ur opinion. We have steep hills so I do need a fair bit of power for pulling the 2300 gallon tanker.

You have a T3 6465?

That's plenty for your tanker. Consider adding some ballast..
Ya, it isn't a bad tractor to be fair, I am just looking to buy another tractor (that's bog standard in the engine) and another tanker for it. I prefer bog standard mechanical engines as I feel that I can get the most out of them in terms of power and torque while lasting very long time too, unlike the new commonrail engines, They are very restricted and bogged down and thats why I opt for a bog standard instead. I have a mf 165 and she would pull the house down, add a turbo to her and she will put out 98hp. My only gripe with the t3 6465 is that there is a few electrical problems with it and I think the scavenger pump(high pressure pump) needs some attention too as there is an ER(error) code appearing on the screen on the dashboard the whole time. Do you know what generally causes that to occur.

No, I don’t know what causes your error code, someone more familiar with them on here likely would though.

Your 165 will use a Perkins 203 or 212. I’ve a 212 in an old IH and I’d bet that if it could put out 98hp it wouldn’t be for long.

T3 6480 uses the same engine as your 6465 T3.

Plenty of options out there, your choice.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.
