Maincrop or stubble turnips

Which would be best for mid June sowing. To be grazed after Christmas by lambs. Usually grow stubble turnips but the early sown ones are getting quite woody towards the end of the season. Thanks

For June I would go Swedes, Maincrop Turnip or Kale for later feeding
I did Swede and Cow Cabbage one year, that was truly fantastic , a presision drill works best for that though

I opt for maincrop turnips over swedes if I can. The seedlings are more vigorous, so cover the ground faster and more likely to outgrow flea beetle sooner. Protein will be slightly higher and roots bigger, if a low enough seed rate (1kg/ac Max). If it does fail then the seed was only a third of the cost too.

Massif turnips are FAR higher yielding than Green Globe and sheep graze them better ime. Massif is in very short supply this year apparently, after some kind of seed failure somewhere. Watson Seeds up in Scotland have stocks though, or did a couple of weeks ago (thanks @Yale 👍).

I never plant my maincrop turnips until July, to reduce fly risk. Swedes want to have been in by now ideally, but a few more weeks for massif ime.
When is the best time to sow swedes. Some say May for best crops but was that in the day of seed treatment for fly. Others say after the longest day.
Ours went in last Sunday and have had a good soaking this week. If we had sown 3 weeks ago they would not have germinated until now anyway.
We also put maincrop turnips in at the same time.

Just before a week's rain is an ideal time ime. (y) More important than any calendar date.

Used to sow mine last week of may never had a problem and Swedes like dustbin lids, would not know when the longest day is but late swedes are a wast of time ,
