Have been looking for some straws for the galloway heifers. Wanted to use lowline Angus but it's not available or €250,- per straw.
Came across Murray Grey, seems interesting especially the square meater
Anyone used them before?

Murray grey was sold by Genus for use on dairy cows for same reason as Welsh black, more fertile and get cows in calf "better"

Whitebred Shorthorn would be a better bet @Boso . The resultant Blue Grey calves are a recognised cross that just works and I would imagine that they are easily calved. @Old Tip may know better or @JP1 .
Thanks for your input, shame WBSH is not available over here. Checked out the Blue Grey. Interesting, you Brits do like stratisfied systems😉.

I wonder if a moderately sized continental hill breed like Aubrac would be an even better cross for hybrid vigour (compared to native British breeds as the WBSH or descendants from those like the Murray Grey.

Back in the last century, I used to buy and rear all the calves for the beef enterprise here.

I had a short lived infatuation with Murray Greys after buying some cracking calves out from Drayton on several occasions. I always thought they looked a bit like a Charolais in my eyes, but sadly, this failed to carry through to adult animal.

Granted, that might have been the cow's fault, but as I recall, they were from trad Fresians, so not a modern hat rack. 🤷‍♂️

Sounds very similar to my experience, buying off a local pure freisian herd. We kept a few heifers as cows and they made good mothers but the mart really didn't like the finished cattle.

Had six in our mixed suckler herd years ago. All raised good calfs and four of the six were docile and friendly the whole time and not any trouble. Two of them were always a pain when they calfed, as they never took to the calf for a couple of days. Fine after they did. Just that first couple of days.

As has been said above, all were very long lasting and low maintenance cattle.
