The defender market is still what is being filled by high specced double cabs.
Pricing miles above these will be the final nail in their coffin.
+VATIf you think that Defender is going to start at 35K you will be sadly mistaken.
It’s no longer just farmers but if you add the horsey set, tradesman, shooting set and numorous other rural businesses surely you will have a sizeable chunk of potential buyers but like most things in life pricing is crucial. I would say that given that a high specced double cab is mostly under 30k, pricing their product at more than 10k more money will be a risky strategy. Especially with JLR reliability reputation. That's the problem - I am having high spec raptors shoved at me all the time. And Jeep really want to sell me one of the new Wranglers - but they are £40k as well.
Having had zero response from Land Rover about trying the defender, I really don't think they care what farmers think.
Show me a double cab pick up with a V6 or V8, 8 speed gearbox the interior and chassis engineering of a Disco for less than 30K?
Raptors are under £30k, about £35k with the vat.
They don't seem to much different to the old Disco - the new one's are like £70k aren't they? I've not driven the new one.
Top spec Ford Ranger wildtrak could be bought this time last year for around 23k plus vat. That’s with all the boxes ticked.Show me a double cab pick up with a V6 or V8, 8 speed gearbox the interior and chassis engineering of a Disco for less than 30K?
The raptor is hardly anything like a Discovery.

I reckon there might just be a no thrills - steel wheels / no carpet etc basic version at about that - there were some picture on social media of such a beast a few weeks ago
Yes, for the MOD. Why the heck would they devalue their brand by doing a Tesco value version?
Thanks for that ! Until recently I drove a Defender it was a sight better vehicle than my present one (l200) I sold it because it was 12 years old and if I could have bought a new version of the old Defender I would have they suited my needs perfectlyWhy do all the other ponces drive a defender?

But why would they be devaluing the brand by offering a basic spec. The whole brand was created by a basic vehicle. Once over they catered for everybody from the peasant, to the lord and lady of the manor! They had a range used by utilities and mod right upto the gentry. Now they are just a one trick pony. If they had developed a concept a long the lines of a pick up they still would have that wide ranging appeal. The double cab pick up has been a world wide success so it’s not a narrow British market but a world wide one.
How's that going for them? That was 50 years ago or something. JLR now sell premium products, not something with wobbly doors and a PTO.
