Almost had a nasty one in our Claas Arion just after we got it, coming down road I had noticed a light on dash I didn't recognise, backed right off throttle to turn into farm road end but didn't slow down (engine braking usually enough to slow for turn) so started braking just before turning, hardly slowed at all, near crashed into hedge. It was doing its regen so was still revving hard. Wish we had gone for something ad blue.

The Fendt uses Adblue but also has a soot filer [DPF]. So do the very latest John Deere.

The bigger tractors with Adblue but no DPF, mostly Agcopower and FPT/Iveco engines, must burn extraordinarily soot free and clean to get away with not needing a DPF. I wonder whether there are performance compromises to allow this? Its certainly less cost and faff to have an engine that does not need a DPF and, certainly in the long term, less maintenance cost too.

There be a lot more come out about the emissions scandal in cars yet and I don't think the truck and tractor engines will pass more stringent tests if more are brought in.

I do worry how much it will cost to replace the DPF. from memory its every 3000hrs?

I suspect that the DPF life will depend very much on how often it regenerates during its lifetime. Also I suspect that as it fills up with ash from each regeneration, it will reduce in soot filtering capacity and will need to regenerate more and more often until it eventually fails and needs replacing.

Hopefully there will be a factory re-con system in place for these things, or otherwise that a replacement comes down to sensible money. But with an oil filter costing up to £100 for some models these days, I don't hold out much hope of a replacement new DPF being less than £1000.

Our new 720 has had 4 re gens in 150 hours was beyond a joke! Local mechanic told us about a sensor that's bolted onto the bulkhead below the bonnet said give it a wee blow down with airline and cable tie a plastic bag round it seems to be working good so far!

Our 6150R Jd is regens from what I'm told by main driver every 100 hours or so, I was driving if today and it makes a fair bit extra noise when doing it. Bloody ridiculous that it literally pumps out blue smoke when it's doing it. It seems to make the pto very harsh when it's doing a regen too.

Can be a big problem this , have you checked the engine oil ? @dazza b , as if the engine temp is wrong the regen puts diesel in to the engine sump , Know of a few pick-ups that need a engine oil change every 400 miles because there is that much diesel in the oil from regens, You can get it switched off OK, Volvo shovel we demo had it on it was a pain in the neck, Would not got down that road ever

Just been serviced 40/50hrs ago. So how do you go about getting it switched off?

The DPF does indeed fill with ash slowly just like your woodburner does. You have to empty it after a while as the 'grate' is full and it restricts airflow. Anything that causes more soot than normal will fill the DPF faster,(& require more frequent regens) that includes oil burning or using oil that is not ultra low ash, excess EGR, low boost pressure, or the engine running cooler than it should, or heaven forbid, manipulation of fuelling without providing extra air for it to burn cleanly.

They can be power washed out, although that does release a lot of concentrated nasties- funny that Zetor make their DPF's easily removable for cleaning and suggest they can be power washed, yet there is a very profitable industry going for safely cleaning them under controlled conditions, collecting the residue and sending it for decontamination with all the tickets required...

1. I suppose they have satisfied the law by 'placing' their machine in the market with the correct emissions standards. The law (currently) doesn't say it must be maintained to those standards.

2. I'd expect Zetor want to preserve their reputation for economical to run machines - having to shell out for a new DPF honeycomb every x thousand hours won't do them any favours, especially in their mostly domestic Eastern European market.
