Nitrogen in Maize drill

Soil results show no need for and extra P and K for maize so just 150kg/ha seed bed Nitrogen recommended. How much AN can be put down the spout on the drill without negative effects? Any advise appreciated. Thanks

What are your P and K indices?

Most people I had growing maize applied no extra nitrogen because it didn't seem to provide any benefit. The 50kg of DAP seemed ample. Don't forget sulphur.

Indices of 2 & 3 for p and 2 for k. It’s had plenty of Fym and sewage sludge as well. Just wondered what was the best way to apply N and How much I could get away with putting through the drill. Thanks for the reply.

why would you put DAP down the spout with the amount of P in the cake? just put some N down the spout and top dress if needed

I was always told maize was lazy and unless it had the fertiliser down the shout to get it going then it will get off to a slower start regardless of the index’s

Gotta be under the roots.

Also his P indices were not crazy, 2s and 3s, the crop is gonna take some away (and a lot of potash) so DAP under the row will be fine.

I have gone back to fertiliser down the spout this year. Have avoided DAP for years because of high phosphate indices, also having high ph soils in my view applying phosphate is unnecessary. I have used 150 kg/ha of 27.0.0 37s. It’s not out of the ground so I am waiting to see the results.

I have always had issues with early vigour of maize. I don’t think the quoted numbers really relate to the high ph/ shallow chalk soils I have. At this time of year the fields go white and I have a theory this slows warming of the soil. Not a problem this year as the soil was consistently 12 degrees a fortnight ago, but is the reason I wanted to try n down the spout.

The placement of the phosphate is important. I have seen cock-ups with starter fertiliser on all kinds of soils, even on those with high background fertility, those seminal roots need to hit phosphate ASAP or it stunts the plant.

Hard to tell without soil testing.

Most of my clients would use 40-50kg/ha of DAP or similar at drilling and nothing else. Land would be plastered with slurry or FYM annually. Rarely bothered with nitrogen as it didn't seem to make any difference to quality or yield.

our independent agronomist has been pushing the last few years for us to pull all supplemental nitrogen applications. On dairy land that has been heavily manured he says it rarely helps.

We started using DAP years ago and thought it was a waste of time then went to 27-0-0-12 down the spout guess what we are back to DAP even with good p and k indices. I think that tells you all you need to know.

Just shows how it needs placing next to the seed
