Octopost or fence n forget?

I d be grateful for opinions on the above. I’m just about to order. Many thanks.
We've got both... pretty Octoposts around a letting cottage and proper creosoted posts from F & F around the farm where it matters. The Octoposts are sometimes as 'heavy' with creosote as the F & F ones, but usually not; the treatment does seem to have penetrated well on them though.

I'm happy with the Octoposts around a holiday let - as required by Mrs Danllan's aesthetics - but I don't buy into the spiel about them, not sufficiently enough to have them around the fields. By that I mean that it simply doesn't make any sense to me for them to claim that a machined post can be as strong as one 'in the round', or that having any rings exposed is a help in extending a post's life.

When I've had to cut them, F & F posts have been clear winners in terms of penetration. One other thing I've noted is that when put in the Octoposts' points 'crumple' more often than others do... It's also total boll*cks that they always present a flat face for railing etc., they are a bit easier to put in straight than half-round posts, but it's still a pain to get them aligned.

F & F have a reputation that I think is well deserved, Mark was finding it hard to get the right wood at one time. As has been noted above, there are other sources of well-creosoted and well-grown posts

Scanpole/BBH are pushing their new range of machined round posts.
Trouble is they machine off the softwood which gives flexibility and takes the treatment thus creating a weaker/poorer treated posts which is no better than octoposts.
You can still get proper cundy posts from them but they're pricing them higher to get you to buy the machined round.
Worst of all they won't stand by poorly treated posts and are quickly throwing away their reputation as a supplier of quality.☹️

It’s a disgrace the quality of wood posts. Why are they allowed to sell such crap. We have some runs which are all shot after about 5-7 years. Have some larch to put in who knows how long they will last. Is the wood in creosoted stuff the same as the others ?

I have had that argument with one of their suppliers!! They will end up no better than the rest before they have done.

Depends what you've brought. Creo is generally red wood pine. Some tanalised UC4 is redwood as well but a lot of the short lasting posts are spruce.
