For heavy work that's too far gone for me. The rings on the trailers must be wearing badly as well. Try using some grease on the new one?

Does grease actually do anything or would it not just get shoved out of the way and you'd be metal on metal within 10mins?

A very quick squizz online suggests an new Dromone pickup hitch hook is 180 quid. At that price it's not worth the risk of an incident featuring a broken hook and member of the public, or anyone else for that matter

Arguably it could be worse, if you were working in dusty conditions it could make a grinding paste and accelerate wear.

JD hooks notoriously soft and wear fast.
Retrofit a dromone ball insert and spoon on the trailer and they have an actual grease nipple that takes care of this.

A tip for anyone interested,extend the leak of pipes from spools down to hook so it gets a bit of lubricant.works ok but probably not envoirementaly friendly.could be an issue for new tractors that don't leak.

Try draining the oil out your engine and tell me how that goes.....
Seriously though, a blob of grease on the hook every morning makes a ridiculous difference.
When run dry, the metal starts galling or "picking up" which is much worse than grinding paste could ever be

Nowadays I oil my hitch seems to last better than grease. WD40 is useless as a lubricant.

You're other issue will be that will have worn the rings on the trailers as well so a new hook will probably wear much faster too. Be worth checking trailer rings and probably need to replace some as well.

Grease just mixes with dust and becomes a grinding paste to wear it down.
Is that a bennet hook? We have them on fendts and they are just soft rubbish. not cheap to replace either..
